two weeks ago and did some retro spotting... Not sure what this Golf was all about... Hidden down a side street, Shiney chrome interested, twin pipes almost become barry.... Couldn't go to the lakes without experiencing some Land Rover love, Saw this two, a 53 plate Camper, which got me thinking... you can still buy one of these, and it's 19k for a RHD one, which is the price of some of the restored ones. and with the new ones you don't need to worry about rust, and you know it's history and you can use it everyday...they come with the 1600cc engine, and you could get a few extras and still use it everyday, i really want one... See their website heretheir demostrator is nice,

But by the time you've got up to the spec of their demonstrator you're pushing £30k.... Afully restored bay to the same spec would be half that....

that golf is.... interesting! reminds me of the adverts in Auto Express years and years ago (when it first started) for sticker kits for cars such as Metros and Fiestas.
The 'new' bay window camper thing.... i see your point. however a restored bay window won't fetch £19k, only decent splitties fetch that. still a fully restored bay will set you back 9-10k so if you're serious about wanting reliability, solidity etc then a new one isn't toooooo bad. they can certainly be made to look the part, and they have a few nicities such as working heating and a fuel injection motor i believe.

Never trust a man Who names himself Trevor. Or one day you might find He's not a real drug dealer.

what i forgot to add is that i'd rather spend a quarter of the price of a stock new baywindow on a s/hand wedgie transporter, plus muchos cool stuff to make it go well and look like a winner.
bay windows are 2005. Wedgies are the way forward.

it's still one of those things that if i had the money i'd buy one.

yeah i know what you mean though. if i had the money it'd be cool, all the good bits about aircooled VW ownership without the regular attention by the AA.
It'd suck as an investment, but if i had the money.......

i'd best stick in at school then, and get a good job to afford one.
not many 15/6 year olds aspire to own a vw camper

Are the days of cheap VW Camper ownship over? 1k+ for anything worthwhile?
can you no longer buy one for like £500....

sadly not these days - keep hold of your money and wait is my advice.
15 years ago beetles were insane money. you could spend thousands and it still wouldn't pass an MoT. now everyone's ditched them in favour of campers so you can pick up a solid, unmolested, nice early beetle for less than a grand. if you're happy with a 70's beetle, a few hundred quid.
the same thing, with time, will happen to campers as it's just daft now, nobody can afford them. the only people buying are rich kids who've seen jamie olivers samba and think it looks cool, give it a few years and everyone will realise they need lots of attention, maintinance and welding to keep it alive and ditch it cheap.

All of the ones on the bay for under a grand have needed welding - cool, but expensive.
i like beetles, but not as cool, couldn't go camping in a beetle quite as easily...
...me and my mates will stick to the transit idea then...

I can't see that 53 plate bus looking like this one in 25 years time, no matter how much you wax it... Nor will your average 'restored' example, frankly. Problem is, there's not many like this one left...

I couldn't buy one based purely on the horrendous roof line(!!!!) .... and whats with those door ridges? ........

roofline, door ridges?

yeah... the horrendous roof line on the later type... the roof line should have a nice curve... (you cant see in the green classic one above because thats had a conversion) but look at another classic camper tin top or with a devon conversion (smaller pop top) ... and you will much prefere the roof line...
and the ridges in the front doors (that kind of follow the wheel arch) shoudn't be there...

When I dropped the 180B estate off at Freestyle Bodyworks he had four various VW campers all in for work. Lots of rot!

Parked next to a couple in tescos on Saturday who were filling the front of their brand new 54 plate beetle with shopping. That's an old style beetle, from Mexico I assume. It only had one tailpipe! It looked lovely but subltly wrong, still brand new, warrenty etc.

Wedgies are the way forward. Not sure about these new/old campers and vans - having experienced repair panels from the same source I am a little dubious over the build quality compared to the original German built buses - i'm sure they are fine if well looked after but you just can't imagine them lasting the 30 odd years like the originals 10K would buy an absolute rust free minter of an early bay from someone like WolfsbergVW who specialise in sourcing/importing such vehicles - and it would have so much more character.
