Ok before I start, this isn't everyones cup of tea, if it offends you etc. i'm sorry if you think it might offend you don't read on, otherwise enjoy.
Well this will explain the username to those of you who don't know why I'm Joethefish...
For the past 8 years there has been one love in my life greater than cars and that is Freediving and spearfishing.. as a quick way of explanation.. freediving is easiest thought of as Scuba diving without the the air tanks So basically swimming about underwater with no air..
It comes in many forms, mostly competitive where people try to go deepest (more than 100m) or hold their breath the longest (9mins plus) on a single lungful of air. I used to dabble in that world but my real love is spearfishing.. a sport carried out while freediving. Its exactly as it sounds.. fishing using a spear. That said collecting things to eat underwater is kind of grouped in under the spearfishing heading despite the fact you don't always use a spear.. so by way of real explanation and as we all love them have some pics...
First I a box full of bits.. mask helps you see, snorkle lets you breath while your face down on the surface, suit keeps you warm.. and looking like james bond and 8kg of lead counteracts the fact the suit floats.. a lot!
These help you swim.. especially up and down while using less energy (very important when your doing it all holding your breath) They are best part of a meter long ;D and..
The blade is carbon fibre.. the dogs danglys in fins
Well that little lot lets you swim about well but what about the 'spear' bit.. and don't pretend otherwise its why you all read this far!
The 'baby' 50cm barrel and pneumatic powered used in low vis, winter and when your head is jammed in a cave ;D oh and at night too . effective range 1.5m
The day to day all rounder.. 75cm barrel, powered by 22mm diameter rubber bands. effective range 2.5m oh and..
its carbon too ;D
Then there is these..
The green one is 90cm barrel effective range 3m its the good vis gun.. the blue one is 100cm barrel powered by 2 rubbers.. effective range 4-5m, used for very good vis and spooky fish, oh and of course..
Carbon
I have two other guns.. one I will be taking a photo of later (after diving) s you will love it. Its a pimp 75cm barrel but the entire gun (handle barrel etc. etc. is a single moulded sheet of carbon)
Oh and you'll remember that I mentioned 'night' earlier.. if your diving in the dark you'll need a torch.. or a pimp torch in my case:
18watt HID torch and 8 hour battery ;D
Well put all that together and you get:
looking like a fool with the lads..
fresh wild seabass, thats bigger tastier and cheaper than tescos..
not to mention a few other species
and some other tasty morsels
Oh and yes thats a real size beer can.. and a 13lb lobster ;D
and of course the best campsite feasts ever!
Hope you enjoyed.. feel free to ask questions and don't go jumping in and trying it.. its not safe to do without some experience/training especially alone.. I wont go into the dangers of tides, currents, cramps, shallow water blackout, getting fingers broken by crabs and lobsters, shooting yourself/someone else, hypothermia, bursting eardrums... oh an the occasional shark
That said if anyone seriously wants a go.. let me know.
