Fancied one of these for ages but finally got round to getting one. Trundled up to London in the Datsun van and picked it up. I already have a later one (monoshock on rear) but its a bit too tall for me really so I decided to get one of these more old skool ones. It has drum brakes and 6 volt electrics. Been unused for a few years. Just trying to do the fork seals on it today and got stumped already as they don't want to budge!

sweet, been tempted myself to sort one out for myself too. is that a 23" front?
forks seal need the whole thing to be taken apart, you need a forked tool to reach inside and hold the damper tube while on the outside bottom there should be a big allen key to undo.

ok fork seal replacement dodge. (this worked a treat for me) lift off dust cover and seal circlip. remove topcap of fork stantion, (leg) remove spring. extend fork to full travel, fill with cheep oil to top. replace topcap. you now have a ram that if placed between a wall one end and jack the other end will when compressed push the seal out. i will try to find the link and post it, but this worked brilliantly for me. BTW, are you interseted in selling your larger bike?

23 inch front, and yes the other bike (1989) will be available soon. Thanks for replies but since posting the first post I have now changed the seals. I took the legs out and took the caps and springs out of the top, (drained oil out) then found the allens at the bottoms, luckily they came out wihtout haveing to hold the inside part. then the chrome tube thing just lifted out. then I popped the seeals out with a screwdriver and drifted the new'ns in with a big socket . reassembled. Didnt have any fork oil so I used car strut oil! Seemed very runny, but bike rides fine so all is well. Still bringing a little oil up it seems

Are the forks straight in the tee pieces? slightly twisted forks will leak oil, and there are easy to twist when there that long

they're straight as the forks slid beautifully in and out of them. Next weird problem is the headlamp. I bought a new bulb 6v 35/35w , put it in, started the bike turned it on and the bulb ran super bright and blew within 2 seconds. flicked it to hi beam, and blipped the throttle, same thing happened. The headlamp is driven direct from the engine it seems but the rest of the electrics (including tail lamp) are powered via the (6V) battery. Do you think its possible the headlamp system could be 12 volt? Or is there a headlamp regulator somewhere that's knackered?

sound like the rectifier is gone, can you put a volt meter across the battery with the engine running? it should have no more then 7v may 7.5v These forks slid in fine two! okay yours are probably not as bent at that but it only takes a small amount to twist and leak the forks, the chrome is good yeah?

cool. What hear is that? Is it a USA model? stick a hay bale on the back The DC side of things is ok, horn, stop, neutral light. Just the headlamp circuit (AC) a few pits in the fork chrome, not much I can do about that.

perhaps it's a later engine and now it's pumping out 12v? I'm afraid it's just basics otherwise go through the loom and check for short circuits.

As a small amount of inspiration... This is the XL250 a mate and I resurrected a few years back. Was got for naff all. The engine was shot to hell and it had half the lights missing. A CB250Rs engine was sourced, installed and the whole thing converted to 12V (hence the square headlight) with parts laying around in the lockup and lashings of gaffer tape. The paint finish is 50% natural rust and the rest is white paint... is brilliantly rough to look at!!! The pictures are from the Welsh national Motorcycle show where on a dyno run it made a healthy 15bhp, sounded great, gave us a laugh and then burnt the tester!!! Is great fun to ride and pulls like a train... the 21" front wheel is the pig as tyres are seemingly non-existant... Top bikes though. ;D

hi i have solved the problem. I bought one of those universal AC 12v regulators (limiter) from a certain auction website and installed this and a H4 65/55W 12V car headlamp bulb. Rest of electrics is still on the standard 6V DC system. Works perfectly it seems.
Still strange but at least its working now and the headlamp is way better than the original would have been.
I bought a seat cover for it too and nearly decided to staple it on myself then thought better of it and dropped it off at my local upholsters to do, had rather a shock when I collected it as he charged me £80 ! Probably get it MOTd next month. Can't believe how much bike MOTs cost these days, I remember they were like a tenner not so long ago, which seems crazy since now they take even less time as they just print the paperwork off the computer. Grr.
