whent and picked up the merc i won on ebay got a few probs with it 1: it wont fit in the garage 2: the wife hates it 3: it needs a carb as it wont tick over and if you turn it of when hot it wont restart no good for work as i come home at lunch time and i wouldn't be able to get back to work till the car had cooled down that said its quite a nice looking car it does need some work one front wing could do with replacing i have found 2 areas that will need welding ( only small bits ) but i'm afraid it will be no good for me so i'm putting it back up for sale don't want any profit in it just what it cost just thought i'd offer it on here first before it goes back on the bay £350 if anybody wants it

Get a new wife!!!,Thats one sweet MERC. ;D BUT change the COIL.there is nothing in the carburetor that will stop it from starting when HOT. It's a common problem on Mercs of that age because of the way the ballast resistor is wired. Is it a Solex 4A1 carbie? If so,do the following... The most important thing you can do is remove the entire choke mechanism.(NOT THE PLATE ON THE SERCONDARYS THOUGH!) that includes the brass plate (don't drop the screws down the carb) the rod that goes across, and the auto choke device on the side of the carb. There is a water conection running to the carb to the block, remove the conection from the carb and join the hoses to gether with a peice of copper tube. On some of these carbs there is a fuel enrichment device under the choke with a strong spring, when this spring is sticking you will get an overich situation causing the car to run rich and genrally run like curse word. use some small washers to keep the enrichment device shut,or if you are really handy ,remove it completely. You will now have car thAT RUNS IN THE "HOT" conditon all the time,so on cold days it takes about 4 pujmps onm the pedal to get somew juice in the manifold ,it will start ,but it takes a bit of feathering to get to run smooth for a minute or so.But the difference is dramatic !!. ;D on My merc i even disconnected the maniofold heat ,but i live in Brisbane where today it was 31 degrees ;)and I never need any heat there.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.
