perhaps slightly OT...
I have this knack of remembering TV shows which nobody else does and this goes to the depth of me considering the possibility of a false memory / acid flashback or general halucination.
The subject of today's curiosity is a programme which was called "On The Line" which was a soap type show staring Ricky Tomlinson (maybe) as the shop steward of an ailing British car firm who's future sucess is pegged on the sales of a new model they are launching called the Orbit. Of course the work force decide to go on strike and the car company closes down and all that. I think he even had the same lady play his wife as in Brookside and Royle Family although for the life of me I can't recall her name today.
I think it would have been 1979 or so it was made, as the new T reg cars were out and the TV Times had an Orbit from the TV show to give away as a prize complete with the registration ORB1T on it. This plate now resides on a Range Rover Sport HSE according to the RAC.
As I recall the Orbit itself was based on a Mk1 Fiesta with a restyle which made it look rather like a Lada Samara or something.
Now as this show was set in a car factory I recall them having a fair few of these Orbits about. there wasn't jsut the one, there were drivers, part built ones for production line scenes and so forth. Could any survive?
My googlefu is weak today so I can find no photos of the Orbit and nothing relevant comes back for my searches for On the Line.
Can anyone put me out of my misery on this one? A photo or even simple confirmation that this all did exist?

Can't remember that, but you just reminded me about Gung Ho, early Ron Howard movie staring Michael Keaton and the Assan Motor Company,.. which was made up at the time,.. but now exists.

You've got me intrigued, but I can't find a sausage about it. Maybe you've got the wrong title, if you remember any more about it, the best place to search is here: www.imcdb.org;D

I'm pretty sure there was a piece in Custom Car on the restyling of the Orbit. I'll have a dig later and see what I can find.

top marks for long term memory alistairk i vaguely remember the concept, but nothing of the show, not cast, story or the car i have asked on a few specialist betamax hoarders blogs, theres a slim chance someone still has an episode, google comes up with nothing (except the imdb page)

I work in the TV Listings department at the Press Association - we work on a ton of mags here, including TV Times (I believe) so I will see if anyone here knows anything about the show.

I remember it too. Wasn't the company a family owned one with a couple of warring brothers? I seem to recall one of them was into rallying too. I think I can picture one of them, quite a regular actor on TV but can't think of a name or what else he's been in.

Wasn't on the road a program about two blokes in a truck who were learning to read and write as they drove round? That was "on the move" Title song went On the move On the move We're on the moooooove again I'm pretty sure me & my bro used to sing "on the loo, on the loo, we're on the loooooooo again". My level of humour has not risen far above that level since. They had a scruffy dark green Ford D series box van with some arrow logo painted on the side. was there some kind of animated (puppet) animal involved as well? It was a programme aimed at improving adult litteracy although it was on just after the kids TV shows at lunch time so I used to watch it. Now that WAS a long time ago. & Captain Pugwash is still about. There were some "digitally remastered" or something epidsodes I saw a little while back, and its just not the same. They've remade Rubarb & Custard as well. Unless "captain" or "Pugwash" has some bizarre meaning to you I'm not sure what your getting at anyway. And before it goes all OT the cabin boy is called Tom, nobody has the rank of Seaman and the 2nd in command is a Master Mate... I still have the books from when I was a kid 1970s Pre-political correctness when humour was all "Chalky White" and "Love Thy Neighbour" is one form of Retro I can live without!
