1988 KMX seems road versions were around 4-5 years behind the proper motorcross versions in style. The road bikes are never as high at the back though and just don't seem to have the 'attitude' of the crossors

On a seperate note, how do you stop em getting nicked?
I live on a council estate, right next to a park and fields where the local 'youth' ride their crossors and hang around the shops.
Ive a feeling I'm gonna need a bloody big chain if I'm going to keep it for more than a few days!!!
Big lump of concrete/railway sleeper set into the ground with a big old loop of steel to chain it to?

Looking at all them together, that YZ is looking VERY appealing!!
Sticking with YZ/DT and RM/TS for now, how different are the engines? How had would it be to either swap the motors and all the bits? Or, maybe just use all teh electrics/lights etc from the road version to convert the off road version?

A nice big anchor bolt sunken into a heafty bit of concrete and a beasty chain/lock should do the job..! You could always remove a few easy parts like the HT cap for that extra bit of annoyance!

you don't want a ts, they are absolute wibblepoo. dt;s are without your best bet, but it will get nicked. and tbh, if you did want to run a mx bike with a full charging system, it isnt hard, just make up a simple wiring loom and you will need to adaot a charging coil from another bike to fit.

I like ts's myself but them fall-apart power valves can test a mans wallet and patience. Dt's have a good engine, rotary power valves can be turned 90 degee's and there ya go 12bhp.
i'd go for the dt125 or kmx125 or crm125 for fun then when you get a real license (and some skills) get a rmx250. theres a world of difference between a softroader like the dt and a rm, mind you i think the kmx would be the most hardcore of the 125's. wish i'd never let mine go anyway.

Thanks for teh advise. Tipical though isnt it, the DT is teh best bet, and yet ive never liked them. A few friends had DT's and they never really did it for me. don't know why. I have/had the skills, used to ride alot but havent riden for over 10 years so ill start small. Hopefully ive calmed down since i was a kid, i was a bit 'wayward' with my old AR125 If i get on with bikes well enough again a road regal RM250 is very high on the list of wants! Any more details on KMX's? Can you get bits? Do they go bang? I liked my old AR, beat teh hell out of my mates RD so maybe a kwaka would suit me.

Don't think they go bang (certainly better then a ts anyway) one thing to look for is the in the name i think the kmx125a1 is the full power one and the kmx125b1 is the restricted, could be the other way round though. No idea how to de-restrict one but it can't be that difficult.

A mate had one of these that was very peaky having been fettled by a racer in the past: I managed to blag his Dad into letting me have a go on it (having never ridden a bike before at 14 ;D) and ended up flipping it over and snapping off the rear mudguard

Probs better with a road-triallie than a crosser for the road? Although I'm only going by the CR250 I had - sharp head angle, not ideal for the road really, and v.short piston ring life under full chat use. I think daytime lighting kits were available for them. The powerband was furious fun though.
Every crosser I looked at was thrashed, trashed and neglected by yoofs, except the CR. Nearly gave up (wanted one to convert to road use - a "Super Retard" - borrowed from the Super Motard idea born in France).
The g/f passed her test on a TS, it seemed exceedingly tall compared to others. It gave us no bother and would wheelie and was enough fun to boing about on. Cheap as chips. Odd looking thing. Friend had a DT which looked nice but gave lots of trouble. Just luck of the draw.

I'm really not that fussed about practicality of road use. It really will just be blatting about and having fun. Not even fussed about short piston ring life, as long as rings are available. Having said that, i think a road version may be best anyway as it saves a whole load of hassle. Unless an RM comes up super cheap

It wouldn't blat though, was all or nothing, full-on powerband thing like a lightswitch. Good fun when ripping but trying to get somewhere wasn't a lot of fun. Part of the plan was to lower the comp ratio and try and get it more usable. Ring life in 'racing conditions' was 6 hours according to the manual, bound to be better if it doesn't always live in the fun zone though! That was that particular CR, others are gonna be different o'course.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
6 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
maybe i wont get a proper motocross then.
What about getting, for arguments, sake an KX with bust engine and a KMX thats tatty and building something from the 2.
Same goes for any other make, will the 'road' version engine etc go easily into the motocross frame? Cant be that hard surely??

It's three maico 490's bolted together, makes about 156 bhp. notice the rust on the forks too? was looking up maico and found that they still are in business now making a 685cc 2-stroke, seriously tempted to blow 3800 and buy that engine..

I have a 1983 RM125 which I will be selling in August/September, as I'm going to South Africa.
If you can wait until then you can buy it if you're interested?
It's only in Huddersfield aswell.
