I have a big hankering for an old crosser.
Not ridden for a while but used to ride 125's when i was younger. So, I'm thinking do my CBT and get a 125. Hopefully i can chain it down well enough for all the field bike riding local esate kids not to nick it!
What i really want is a mid to late 80's bike, before they started bending the seat into the rear plastics.
Idealy a suzuki RM, but at YZ or KX would do.
Never liked the hondas though.
I want a 'proper crosser' not a road version, so, whats involved in getting an old one road legal?
How can i make sure what I'm buying hasnt been nicked 15 times in the past?
Been scouring ebay and it seems 80's ones arent that cheap anymore!
Anyone got any pics of older RM's? I havent paid any attention to bikes for a while, i just remember what i hankered after when i was a kid. I seem to remember upside down forks came in just before they messed up the rear end styling. Did they all have gold rims? Cant remember now.
Anyhow, this may all be pointless if its hard/expensive to get it registered.

i use text check when I'm buying vehicles
"just send the reg to 83600"
i think to register a motorbike it must have lights, indicators, and i think a speedo.
i don't think it would be too hard to get something registered

It wont have a reg number though. Motocross bikes have got to be the most stolen vehicle on earth. There the hardest thing to keep hold of. I'm sure most 80's crossors have probably been nicked at some point ! Just don't want to buy a bike, register it then find out its nicked. Is there a check i can do on the frame number? providing its still there

If it is the same as registering a car, then it shouldn't be too hard. Write to your local DVLA office and tell them what you are doing, they will issue a local VIN number, when it has passed the mot then take the certificate and the insurance documant to the DVLA office and they will issue you a reg plate and 12 months road tax for the relevant fees. Sounds easy but it is time consuming, I have to take my Cortina to the DVLA to get inspected.

there are different rules to registering a mx bike,make it a bit easier. but, on a cbt you are restricted to 12bhp, not much good when 125mx run about 30+bhp

How were other learner legal suzuki 125's restricted? I could just restrict it.

wotcha,theres alot to think about when you register an off road bike, first you have to decide if you want it to be ridden after day light hours, you can reg a bike without lights if it is used between the time they state that are day light other wise you will have to get a charging system fitted and i know you can get them for modern offroaders to make them endro spec but they are very expensive and trying to get a charging system for an old 80s bike would be very difficult. If you do find the right bike you have got to remember that the old two stokes were very unrealiable and generally blew up pistons and rings if used with out regular rebuilds and spares for these were hard to get 15yrs ago when i had a few of them. Your best bet is to try to get hold of a late 70s to late 80s Yamaha DT 125 or Honda XL 125, both of these are reliable and you can still get alot of spares for them especially the honda as David silver spares does alot of old new stock. hope this has helped as ive been down this route quite a few times MY OLD 1985 XLR 600

Ok, so, can i overcome the restriction issues, and the charging issues by, for arguments sake, putting a DT engine etc in a YZ? or MTX stuff in a CR etc etc.
Its the look of the motocross versions i like, not really that bothered what motor is in it as long as it looks right.
Were any of the mid 80's road MX style bikes actually based on the proper motocross version?

Oh, i do want to be able to use it at night, just in case.
don't care about engine rebuilds, as long as i choose something i can get bits for.
It will only be used for popping to the shops etc.
Would it be easier to get a DT/MTX/KMX/TS and add era appropriate plastics etc? Is that even possible?

wotcha again, most plastics except the tank you can modify to fit an early 80s road bike and if you are handy with a grinder you alter the frame to take the crosser tank,id go for the yamaha or susuki because they look the closest to the crosser look you want and tuning wise you can get big bore kits and race pipes for them which take the horses well above the leagle 12 hp which is fun with out pc plod spotting it.

So, I'm looking at TS125 or DT125. I founda couple of project ts125x, could be a go-er. don't seem to be many bits availabel for TS125x though. Are they much different to ts125?

Used to have an xr250 paris dakar, wanted that on the road so much it was an awesome bike.
How about an old DT100/125, they're little tanks to ride!

I had a paris dakar xl250 too! broke my shoe starting it and had far too much fun for what is basically a slow bike.
Nice xl600!
go for a dt VW, the 100 to the 175 are very parts compatible and you can even get a brand new dt175 barrel off wemoto. Enduro spec 'crossers would have had lighting coils installed, which is the big stumbling block really if you want to road register a real competion bike.
Is it a twin shock look your after?

Very true TerraRoot! Haha managed to start mine bare foot, regardless to say i couldn't walk for about a week.
Will never forget the day i ruined the shiny tank by hitting it with an ajustable, bloody loved that bike.. too much fun!

The RM125 is my top bike of choice but these come a close second and third all 3 are 1985
