The other day i was transporting a gearbox on the back seat of my car in what i believed was a highly elaborate and leak proof container constructed by myself. I was also told that the gearbox had been drained of all its oil. Anyhow, now i have two nice big patches of gearbox oil stainage on my rear seat, which does bother me that much, however it STINKS! When the car has been in the sun a little while, i can hardly drive the thing as the smell gags me. So.... Before i rip the bench out and set fire to it in the street, can anyone suggest a slightly less extreme solution ? Cheers Ste

Has the gear oil actually soaked into the foam base of the seat or is it just surface stainage? I fear that if the foam has absorbed the oil you'll be hard pushed to get it out - time for a new squab . If it's only the upholstery, try carpet cleaning products (like 1001, CarpetPower or similar) and steam clean it too... you may be left with a residual stain but it will get the worst of it out. Depending on the colour / material of your seat, you may be lucky....

I darent look underneath the seat!
Theres curse word all oil in the box now, so i hope its only a dribble. When it stops spitting, I'm going out armed with tools and the bench is coming out for inspection, and possibly a hose piping!

are we talking your daily motor that you want to keep in ok condition, or a knackered old parts-chaser? if the latter, i'd just get a knife and cut out any stinky fabric/foam. and leave it

about 1 litre of old gearbox oil poured all over the carpets of my 205 chugga 4 months ago, what a fugging mess. I have scrubbed it out, now the carpets look oK but they feel slightly slimy and it still honks to high heaven, I think its fugged tbh.

The car is my daily car, a lovely, if slightly rusting mk4 polo.
Its sunny now, so I'm gonna have a bash at cleaning it. Might see if i can source a new bench, because i am that lazy!

I'd swap the seat to be honest or take it apart and put what you can in the washing machine after giving it a good hose down and scrub with some powerful cleaning stuff. Gearbox oil is horrid stuff, stinks and very difficult to clean up!
What 'box was it out of interest? Anything to do with the Mk1 Polo?

just ripped the back bench out for inspection. Removed the seat coverings to find both foam bits are fairly saturated with oil.
so, poped over to the local stealership to see how much the foamy bits are, thinking it couldnt be that much....
are we all sitting down? i wish i was when he told me £115 (Ex. Vat)
Needless to say, i chortled, said a polite goodbye, and then went out to the car (which smells really nice now) to laugh my ass off!!!

are the foamy bits not the same as in a 'breadvan' Polo?
There's bazillions of those in scrappy's you can rob one from for much much less than £115....
