Passed this on the A1 today, must have been on the way back from a job. Its run by Luca's Ice Cream in Musselburgh just outside Edinburgh (they do fantastic Irn Bru sorbet) :-) Found photo online: Found another photo from 1935-ish (when Luca's started using it) but is copyright unfortunately. Here is the info from the photo: This ice cream van was one of a fleet operated by a Musselburgh ice cream manufacturer. The bodywork was locally built onto the chassis of a 1923 Rolls Royce once owned by a Spanish Marquis. Philip Luca is serving from the rear. This is a black and white photograph of an ice cream van surrounded by a group of boys wearing the hats of the Boys Brigade. The van has two-tone bodywork with a linear roof-top sign reading: PURE S LUCA ICES. The rear portion of the vehicle is adapted for dispensing ice cream from sliding windows. This ice cream van was still in use during 2000, the 'flagship' of Luca of Musselburgh. It was regularly sent along the coast to Port Seton and North Berwick during summer months; this photograph is believed to have been taken at the latter place.

Must have been a sign of a very good ice cream service back in the day if they could afford a one off coachbuilt rolls royce for everyday use. I cant help but wonder if they ever got they're money back in just selling ice creams? lol.
Very nice either way. Looks in great condition considering its life in service.

According to that, the chassis was 12 years old when they started using it. Old Rolls Royces were made into all sorts of things in the 30's, 40's and 50's... breakdown trucks, tractors Ect.

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Quite a few Rolls Royces got converted to commercial use around that time - all sorts of odd ball ones came out of the wood work during the 80's classic car boom - you have got to remember they were just old luxury barges at the time, and coach building the body for a commercial would have been standard practice It is actually nice to see a converted commercial Rolls that hasn't been converted back

Found out some more from their own website:
Our Rolls-Royce for Hire…Fancy a vintage Rolls-Royce for your special event? Weddings, birthday parties or corporate functions?
Then hire our Rolls-Royce 20 HP, one of the smallest models ever made.
She was originally built for Marques de San Miguel, of Spain, as a Hooper Limousine in 1923.
She then became the property of Viscount Scarsdale and, subsequently, passed through a succession of owners until 1937 when Mr Luca made his purchase from the Southern Motor Company in London.
She was then converted into what is probably the only Rolls-Royce ice cream van!
The Rolls was a familiar feature at the North Berwick outdoor swimming pool and seafront until the late 1950s, with the war years being the exception.
The chassis, engine and gearbox remain original and un-restored, although the bodywork has required maintenance, including a new fabric roof covering, and re-chroming,
These days, she can’t travel too far so we have restricted her movement to approximately a 50 mile radius of Musselburgh.
Should you be interested in hiring the Rolls-Royce, please contact Michael Luca at our factory on 0131 653 3828.
They used to have another interesting van, will see if I can locate pics of that one too.
BTW surfingturnip the Irn Bru sorbet is genius! Their normal Ice Cream is amazing too. When I was little the highlight of may a drive down the coast was Luca's ice cream on the way home! Even though the queue was always out the door (and it still is!)

Their other van used to be this 6 wheeler. Can't remember what make / model though: Looks like a moulded plastic drivers seat? Comfy!

what do you do with an old (out of fashion) Rolls Royce coupe or limo? I ve also heard stories of 1920's/30's rollers being seized and re-bodied as military vehicles during WW2, then either returned to their owners, or auctioned off sometime before 1947, so led to a lot of late 1940's conversions including ice cream vans, charabancs and bus and coach tow trucks, several UK race courses had track-side view platforms, with a Roller doner vehicle

Yeah i guess I'm not old enough to remember back when cars like that werent as desireable as they are today Their other van used to be this 6 wheeler. Can't remember what make / model though: Looks like a moulded plastic drivers seat? Comfy! Awesome! Ive got a kit car mag somewhere with an advert for Hustler, with all they're different plastic and wooden conversions... think its about 1986/7? magazine. Is there a Hustler picture thread anywhere?
