Probably in the wrong place but:
Just curious as to how hard it is do work on these and do the mentioned job, plus how reliable are they I know it all depends on how they are maintained etc or are they only fit for the scrappy??
Cheers Folks

Great cars, but too often thrashed to death. Gearboxes can't really handle the power, so watch out for knackered bearings. Don't think they're particularly challenging to work on but they're not valuable even when mint - you get a stupendous amount of performance for the pound and super-bland looks - GR8 4 UPSETTING BIMMERS!

I had an 820 Vitesse, which is the same engine (T-series I think). The engine is supposed to be a lot better than the K-series in terms of head gasket poppage. Still, just be careful with them. Mine was a well maintained, looked after, service history filled car and then, 4 days into owning it, it started to over heat, and then after just 6 days in total of not all that aggressive driving...it did this....
...sigh. One goosed water pump, withe added bonus of a suspected head gasket. That was the end of that really, sat on the drive for an age, then got the water pump and head gasket fixed, then blew up again, the got cubed.
And that was 'good' car, an opinion that was backed up by the Rover tech who came to look at it for me.

Ive got one. Great cars, comfy, smooth and pretty easy fix. Head gaskets weep unless changed for the klinger one. Run just shy of 200 brake out the box but tuning over about 230 needs new management

The headgaskets aren't too bad to do. The gearboxes are curse word though, and a right curse word to change. If you get it its worth sourcing a spare gearbox and having it rebuilt with steel caged bearings for when the one in it blows up.

I have had Three 620 Ti`s, and very fortunately, the only problem I had on all 3 Cars was a noisy Gearbox, and even so, it held out until I sold it !. In my humble opinion, they are one of the cheapest ways to "200 bhp" that it is possibly to buy !. "Try" to spend the extra few quid and get one with reasonable mileage and a Service History, as well as Bills and Receipts to see if the Head Gasket has been changed/uprated to a Klinger or similar. Two out of the Three cars I owned had Oversize Oil Coolers, Boost Valves and Re-Mapped ECU`s, giving around 240 BHP each, and they were absolute flyers, especially as they looked "stock" in every other way. I would go as far as to say that when I "had" to sell my last one in 2008 because I had a brand New Mondeo 2.5 Turbo on order, I was gutted !!. It was a 1998 car with 55k and a Full History/Bills, (and Mods), and was in Mint Condition, and it drove like a new car. It was as I discovered a fair bit Faster than the new Mondeo Turbo, (220 bhp), handled just as well, and more Economical !. And all I had paid for it was a Grand !!. I even got £1,200 for it when I sold it on, and the new buyer was over the moon with it. So yes, go for it, but be a bit sensible, and don't expect too much from a £150 car of any type or make !. Oh, and shop around for your Insurance. This is the only downside with these cars, as the Insurance Companies are well wise to them, and they are around a Group 17/18.
