Well after the heart sinking news of being made redundant on Monday morning, I've managed to pick meself up off the floor and started to look at alternative means of income. So The goods news is I'm going to need a retro daily hack, the bad news is its 180 miles a day round trip if a contract I'm going for comes off ( but the monies SUPERB ;D ) I'm thinking its gotta be a diesel, perhaps along the lines of a Golf mk2 ( dropped on rallye steelies proper stealth look with matt camo paint ) or similar, gotta be cheap to buy and run on veggie oil So any inspirational pictures are most welocome along with alternatives to the goof. J

£30 a night B&B + working longer hours over 4 days rather than 5.
Job done - then you can have what you like & a three day weekend to play with it!

If you want a daily driver/hack/reliabile old runner then I would say look for a cheap J car; like a Toyota Carina II (but not the Carina E which I think was built in Britain) or Camry or old Honda Accord.

Vauxhall Astra TD - pick one up for £300, it'll drive all day with a whiff of diesel, parts are cheap, fairly old technology so easy to repair, comfy, fairly nippy and it's so cheap, when it fails the MoT, leave it at the test centre Or - gasp - Escort TD. Same as above but halve the price

Saab 9000? We had one, did 150,000 miles never needed jack. Great car! Beautiful interior and build quality too.
Was a 2.0 petrol but seemed quite efficient despite weighing a tonne and then some!

Cheers all for the replies,
I was thinking about early derv astra's a couple of hours ago, after seeing one fly past me on the M6 !!
it'll only be a beater anyway as we have two cars already and I don't want to sell/run into the ground my current daily ( 99 Espace ) as it does everything we need and carries everything we need as well.
Going to get on ol'ebay later me thinks and check out the cheaper end of the market for smokers.
