I was just thinking about the popularity of the Ford Type 9 Gearbox (as you do), but also thinking that these things are getting pretty scarce now, and commanding higher prices...
...so, what other gearboxes are out there that you reckon would be good for a-transplantin'? The Ford MT-75 is still available quite cheaply. I've read about US modders who use the tranny from the Toyota Supra (6-speeders too!). As most Euroblobs these days are FWD, gearboxes for RWD transplants are going to be a bit harder to source in years to come... there's always Mercedes, but they're not renown for building a good cog-swapper. BMW still build cars with the proper wheels taking the power, so I suppose they'd be an option too....

The MT75 is definatly a box to be looking at, Not quite as universal as a type 9 (integral ford bellhousing) but stronger and cheaper nowerdays

as i thought it was an mt-75 ? ? The SD1 V8 used the LT77 box that eventually evolved into the R380, not as easy to come by as the MT-75 though. How about a Getrag box from a E34 5 series, they should be able to handle a quite bit of torque and fairly easy to pick up I reckon.

If you are thinking for the Merc then you will be wanting either a Dogleg getrag or a Toyota Supra 5speed, its torque that kills Gearboxes, why most big V8s end up infront of Slushboxes MT75 is slightly better than Type 9 with regards to shaft and bearing sizes (transit has heavier duty internals) but torque will kill it pretty quickly Corvette 6 speed is good (Lotus Carlton) as is the Omega/senator Getrag but getting rare now

5 speed getrag boxes are good but as the above link shows they are pretty expensive. You could probably buy a dozen type 9`s for that price.
The SD1 had rovers LT-77 gearbox and I think the sherpa vans had the same (V8 ones anyway)
Does anyone know if the BMW getrag is the same as the vauxhall getrag or was there a difference in ratios/bolt pattern or propshaft splines. Cheapest way of getting one is probably by buying a manual monza.
Arent supra boxes supposed to be good for around 600bhp and around the same lb.ft torque.
I think it will be a long time before the ford type 9 and MT75`s no longer become an option as it is still relatively easy to get old ford rocket boxes which have been out of production for over 30 years and also to get competition gear kits for the same.
But I think the sensible way forward are going to be with japanese boxes 200sx`s 300zx`s and supras. Loads of them about and can handle silly power as standard. And most of them are good quick shifting gearboxes (damn site better than type 9`s and MT75`s anyway)

Good suggestions! I was just thinking in general terms really - my Merc V8 will be using the standard 450 slusher as it'll just bolt straight up, and I have one already. The lack of Ford Sierras in the scrappies just got me wondering what we'll do once the Type 9 gets a bit rarer, but as you guys pointed out, there are still plenty of options out there. It's good also to know that if I wanted to upgrade to a stick-shift, there are 'boxes out there that will do the job!

Supra boxes are getting hard to find and you must use the "steel case box " .there is a alloy box which is pretty useless when serious HP is put thorugh it. Here in OZ ,castlemaine Rod shop has been transpalnting these for years and offer all sorts of kits to suit. Rod Hadfeild, the original owner went the States a few years back to get moe boxes because the J supply was getting tight. He went to some wrecker and said he wanted Supra boxes, they asked if he wanted one or more, and were stunned when he said he would take 2,000 if they could load them into a container.... ;D What about the range rover 5 speed ,I understand that is a common swap in the UK (unknown here ). ;D ;D ;D ;D www.rodshop.com.au/

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Thats the LT-77 box as fitted to sherpa vans and rover sd1`s. It was used in range rovers as well but most breakers will not split it from the transfer box as they sell for a lot more as a complete unit.
