Has anyone heard as to the latest plan of banning of solvent based paints by the EEC. They would like to implement it next year and water based paints only will be allowed. Apparantly (if it went through) there will be a period from Jan to Dec next year when solvent based paint will be allowed to be sold and then it will be illegal. It is even going to apply to things like 'Humbrol' Enamel Tinlets used in model making (hence HUMBROL have brought out acrylic water based paints, which are not as good). And whats going to happen about 'Touch up/Rattle cans' in motorfactors? More rules for our 'Nanny State'?

Can't find any reference to this anywhere,.. other than in France they banned applying Solvent based paint outdoors (along with a bunch of other stuff) in the summer because air quality in some areas got so poor.
Any link to hard facts would be useful...

how about motor manufacturers? will they still be allowed to use it; i.e. is it the same as the rest of the nanny laws such as the ban on DIY home electrics where it's only designed to affect mr average, at home, trying to do something himself and save a few quid?
just import them from the USA if they're banned.

Seeing as the article is dated Friday 24 August 2001 and it was a reccomendation from a study that said that new legislation might be needed. I think I'll sleep easy. It'll probably happen one day though...

A lot of motor manufacturers use water-besed paints in the factories - I remember Renault having trouble some years back because they found that bird curse word marks it.

If the market changes to used water based paints the technology will catch up to make them better. If we ban all solvents then water based paints will simply get better. The only real downside is we will all pay more as consumers to comphensate for the development costs.

I'm sure the rattle cans I use from Halfrauds and similar are acrylic based paints. I get fantastic results.

Give it 6-12 months, be illegal to do your own work on cars.
I guarantee it. All in place already in Europe apparently, the scheme, that is...just waiting to spring!

I think you're right - Halfrauds use acryllic based paint. I think it still uses solvent though, no? Also, Halfrauds ask £6.99 for a big tin of paint! Hahaha! My local factors sells half a litre for £2.50 (I've been buying a lot of satin black lately)

I heard that pretty soon Europe will stop you being able to prepare you own meals, you'll only be able to buy pre packaged dinners... I have no evidence to back this up, I just heard it off this bloke, who saw it on the internet. So it must be fact!
