The guys FINALLY came to pick up the Mazda 929 last week. Admittedly it wasn't their fault - the car hadn't been officially imported into the UK so they had a mountain of paperwork to sort before they could take it away. Anyway, they are currently preparing the behemoth for its entry into the Staples2Naples banger rally. They're gonna keep me posted on developments along the way. Progress can be followed at: www.durbster.co.uk/content/s2n/

Hmmm, although they seemed to have removed my (rather fetching, I might say) stickers from the rear windows, they have left the Retro-Rides sticker in place! RR's first motorsport sponsorship deal?! GO US!

The other entries are very dull by comparison - Mundanos, Rover 800s, Mk3 Chavaliers.... these guys are doing it the way it SHOULD be done - in a full-on stereotypical banger! Not some namby-pamby forecourt trade-in!

Cool, I hope it makes it all the way (no reason why it shouldn't) and beats the more modern eurobox curse word. Sweet, free world wide (almost) promotion for retro rides

Incidentally, I spied a two-tone 929 wagon in the hospicle car park today (Yes! ANOTHER one!!).... wanted to RR-flier it, but recieved "the look" from the missus! ;D

I hope they sort out the water pump/cooling out too, it would rock if they beat the more modern stuff.
Maybe you should get them on here for a consultation, I'm sure we could help them out

Morning everyone, Its bloody marvelous to see the old Mazda getting the respect it deserves It certainly has bucket loads of character. We are slowly getting there with repairs but have already gone over budget. I am confident we will have solved the overheating problem by the weekend when we change the water pump which is, I am reliably told, the ONLY water pump of its type in the country......apart from the one on the car. I was just wondering if anyone gave the old girl an oil change whilst in thier possession? We really have no more money and if someone has given her a drink in the last 12 months or so I will be inclined to leave it. What does everyone think? Leave it or change it? Cheers Dan LONG LIVE THE HAZCAR!

Welcome! You guys have the support of everyone here - we're all very fond of the Mazda! I didn't give it an oil change whilst I had it... I don't know if MrSigma did. If it were me I'd be inclined to change it just to give peace of mind. It needn't be expensive - Tesco sell 5 litres of 10w40 for about £5. Sourcing an oil filter may be a bit more tricky, but it may cross-reference to some other Mazda (B2000 van share lots of parts although I'm not sure about the engines) The very best of luck to you guys, we've got everything crossed for you!

Cheers guys, nice to know you are all behind us.
Managed to pick up an oil filter at lunch so we are going to change it tomorrow. We are now the proud owner of a new water pump aswell. Unipart have been absolutely superb and chucked in a fair bit of stuff free for us.
Anyone any idea of rough oil capacity? I am guessing somewhere around 4 litres?
Ooops I forgot to say did you know it is actually an earlier model than first thought. It is actually a 79-82 model and I suspect the earlier of the range as the later one had a 5 speed box. Thats why we found it hard matching up the parts to the engine number at first as we were asking for '84 parts.
Cheers again.

I'd think 4 litres would do the trick. Always best to change the oil, especially for such a long arduous journey! I should have mentioned about the "grey area" around the car's age - when I did the front pads I ordered some for the earlier model. I'll have to bear Unipart in mind for future parts sourcing, sounds like they've been fantastic!
