£600 - £700 of diesel?
I didnt realise you were planning on taking a top-fuel dragster!
I regularly go from Aberdeen to Dover, cross to Calais, Then down to near Toulouse for around £130 diesel in a small van. Thats 1300 miles, my van gives close to 50mpg though.
IMO beg, borrow or buy a van, and either go direct to Rotterdam by fery or choose the road route depending on ticket costs, crossing dover to calais. Forget the tunnel IMO as frankly it can be a farce cost-wise with a van. The cross channel ferries will be significantly cheaper.
Cumbria to Dover is about 400 miles, Calais to Rotterdam is about 200 miles. A 1200 mile round trip in a van that does 25mpg will use 48 gallons or 218 lires of diesel, so slightly over £200 in fuel. If you can get a van that does 35 mpg, consumption will drop to 34 gallons/150 litres, so £150ish.
