Cool find! I'll have to check out the list of books they display as well.
There's cheap and "cheap" though... ;-)

yea, theres definitely no such thing as cheap circuit racing. you could however go hill climbing/spriting for under £1000 if you want in one of hte standard classes. which imho is pretty cheap for motorsport!

There's no such thing as cheap racing. Bracket dragracing is practically free, cost at National Trails on a week night is $15. Run anything from a bone stock Neon or Sentra to a full-on Top Fuel rail. Same price. Lot of guys load up the family sedan and race that. The concept is consistency wins the night's purse. Then there's autocross (gymkhana) cone-dodging, which, again, is nearly free (typical $15 entry cost). No cage, no fuel cell, no engine mods, no suspension mods required (or even allowed, for certain classes). OTOH: IT-class SCCA racing is one way to enter circuit racing on a budget. There are others. Back when I did SCCA IT, we did a full 12 race season for under $5,000 year, including entry fees and hotels. It's obviously more serious racing, doorhandle to door handle, and full safety gear and full allowable race mods needed to be competitive.

Is there any equivilent to the old Slick 50 series that used to run in the UK? Minimal mods, cars had to be driven to and from the circuit. Is there a current equivilent?

Car has to be a standard E30 318 or 320 with cage. Minimal mods. Lots of people drive to and from the circuit: www.pbmwc.co.uk/Charlie

Not familiar with the S-50 series, Dave. What IT rules are essentially: Need a cage and a fuel cell. Have to run stock dia tires on 6" or 7" wide rims, depending on engine class. 4 classes, based on engine size and kerb wt. Cannot strip interior. Engine cannot be touched except for headers, timing work, and light port matching. No turbos. Suspension may be altered using the OE design parameters, meaning leaf remains leaf, coils remain coils, but can use any design or shock units within those limitations. All body do-dads and trim must remain. No add-on spoilers except a small front dam. The Z-car above is an example of IT. Here's mine, to give another semblance:

Yeah I suppose bracket drag racing is the cheapest. It actually works out cheaper to race at Santa Pod for a weekend if you can sell the extra tickets you get than going as a spectator.
Even hillclimbing/sprinting isn't cheap. You might be able to build a car for a grand, but once you add up entry fees, consumables, fuel, storage for the car and/or trailer and tow car, and any damage its bloody expensive.
I was reading an old magazine about a cheap circuit racing series. They estimated that you could do a whole season for around £15,000. Dunno about you lot, but for most people that would be at least half their wage, probably an even bigger percentage.

If my car didn't break down or get damaged during a season of the Toyo Tires Racing Saloons series this is what I reckon it would cost:
12 races at 6 racetracks at £100 per race - £1200 2 sets of Toyo R888 tyres - £500 2 sets of DS3000 brake pads - £300 Oil, brake fluid, petrol £200
So that's around £2,200 for race fees and consumables for a season. And that gives you 15 mins qualyfying and two 15 minute races at each meeting. So 540 minutes on track.
