Roughly about 18 months ago i got hold of this bike cheap off ebay, had not been on the road or even started for almost 10 years! Had been part streetfightered, great!
went to fetch it one very wet evening in my bro's works van and brought it back and plonked it in the dining room (I live with my bro we don't have any silly rules) Wiring loom was shot so got hold of another one and with a bit of fiddling and jiggery pokery it fired! then i got waylaid with women for about 6 months and it just sat int he garden looking unhappy. so after 6 months iuncovered it and was faced with this
so i decided that over the winter i would rebuild it cheap and see where it goes....
so i got it running (badly) then took it apart as you do
painted the frame in the dining room over xmas and rebuilt the front forks, poished the ally swingarm and started putting it together, polished up the old harris can and painted the down pipes in high temp paint, repainted the engine in hi temp paint ate refitted to the frame. Rebuilt the carbs as they were gummed up from sitting so long, stripped them down and fund a dynojet kit! RESULT! so I refitted those with the individual air filters and had it running like a noisy angry beast for the first time in 10 years! happy day!
so i took it apart again as you do, I had aquired a GPZ660r front end you see with a 16" front wheel instead of the 18" standard with a nicer looking mudguard, so i rebuilt that front wnd with new fork seals and rebuilt antidive units. then with the wider front wheel it was the same width as the standard rear.... and thats not one so the hunt was on for a better rear wheel, found a zzr250 which was cheap so i made that fit, bit wider and down from 18" to 17" with a brand new tyre! The rear disc on the zzr250 is slightly smaller so i had to modify the rear caliper carrier to fit
so now i was unhappy with the tail so i looked at my brothers honda cbr600f, played around with the panels and then bought a cheap cbr600f single seat trackday quality seat cowl. I then had to fabricate a subframe for the seat cowl to "kick it up" a bit at the rear
so I set about the dented tank getting it to a decent state on the outside but the inside was somewhat rusty so using a 65p bag of washing soda i cleaned it out using electrolysis then got it painted, got hold of some celly paint and with a sunny day in the back garden it went from this
to this after a bit of flatting and polishing
thats sitting on a spare frame as i bought anothe bike for spares along the way which i will actually be rebuilding to standard spec once this one is done.
this is where we stand now, not long before an mot, just a couple of brake lines (old ones are at least 10 years old) new battery, new number plate, bit of seat foam and a new rear light
All in all it has been a learning curve working out how to fit non standard parts and get everything looking "right" on a minimal budget.
