After seeing Grizz's impressive efforts involving sleepers and plants and stuff, I thought I'd share my garden solution. Since I'd moved into my house my garden looked like this: Not very good. On a couple of occasions it's been triimmed or even turfed but each time it ended up the same. Last year I finally solved the problem: It's been like that for nearly a year now.

lol,
As a keen gardener (with a small garden) I can't understand why anyone would want to astro turf or concrete theirs but I guess it suits your need.
Although I will add that a nice garden can increase the value of your home (if you were looking to sell).

Nice one.......I've got a mate who's Astro-Turfed his, it looked a bit weird to me at first but with a small child and two Staffordshire Bull Terriers it makes perfect sense to me now! No mowing, and the dogs can't dig it up. Unfortunately SWMBO doesn't share my enthusiasm for it which is why I spent half of the Easter weekend preparing/re-seeding half my back garden.

Can I suggest a couple of small goalposts and a half size football I'm imagining a set of foot-high Subuteo players and a 6 foot long index finger on a pole.

so, how do you prepare teh base?
Same as laying turf?

I ended up using a turf cutter to make an even surface and then spent ages levelling it - filling holes with sand where required. It's not perfect, but anything is an improvement on it's previous state!
