k.gibson@the-sun.co.uk is the person to e-mail if you oppose the sun's support of the £2k scraping scheme. 3 reasons to oppose it..... 1. waste (pollution in scraping decent cars and pollution in building new ones) 2. cost - old cars now instantly become worth £2k min, pricing out the needy. 3. Vauxhall, etc, and the govt get rich. (typically if you want to sell more cars you lower your prices) please join me in dropping them a quick e-mail telling them why you don't support their stance. article here www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/motors/article2370332.ece

Of course they are going to support it - they get a lot of advertising revenue from car manufacturers and dealerships. Where would the commercial sense be in supporting old cars? Newspapers are just platforms for advertisers, the news stories are constructed to prime you for being open to buying whatever junk their advertisers (who keep the newspaper afloat) are selling.
Britain is full of immigrants and terrorists! Here, buy yourself a house in Bulgaria.
Crime in Britain is rife! Don't get stabbed by a gang of seven year olds! Get away to Magaluf for a fortnight and forget your troubles.
The planet is dying and it's all your fault! Scrap that nasty old banger - your neighbours laugh at you and think you're pathetic, but you'll show THEM when you turn up in your new car (they don't need to know it's on tick), and you'll get rid of all that nasty guilt about killing baby seals.

As much as I am opposed to this issue, and agree with Benzboy on advertising in "news"papers. This thread is going to be locked and put in the whinge bin. Hotwire will come on at some point and say "THIS IS NOT A DEBATE FORUM" blahblahblah and refer you to www.the-ace.org.uk/current-issues.htmlI'd recommend saving him the bother and deleting it yourself. I'm sure we'd be interested over at www.noskooljustcool.com or many other car forums that host a lot of the members here who care about the fate of our hobby.

I beg to differ - what good could possibly come of this thread turning into a six-page moan about some low-brow tabloid newspaper sucking the c0ck of its corporate sponsor? Surely it's better to get on with enjoying our hobby and finding cool, inspiring cars and projects - that's the best way to support it in my opinion. Have to say I'm quite surprised at the amout of bitterness there is surrounding the whinge bin.

Can anyone explain the campaign a bit more please? From the article Frink linked to it says you get 2 grand towards a a newer car if you scrap your old one, but makes no mention of how old the car has to be, how 'new' the new car has to be or a minimum price (surely they wouldn't give away free cars). It also mentions electric vehicles, but not whether it would apply to just them.

I'd recommend saving him the bother and deleting it yourself. I'm sure we'd be interested over at www.noskooljustcool.com or many other car forums that host a lot of the members here who care about the fate of our hobby. Is it your intention to be that offensive? This one is going to the whinge bin right now. Not because we don't care about our cars or our hobby but because whinging on a forum isn't the solution. Talk to your MP - or even better - become an MP and boycott the Sun if you think that'll help. Another option? Don't scrap your car and I won't scrap mine. My guess is that HoTWire won't be scrapping his either, despite your suggestion that he doesn't care. Of the many, many threads alerting us about the scrapping scheme we've had on RR so far which one do you think Alistair Darling and/or Gordon Brown has read? No doubt he'll mention us on the 22nd of April: "We've decided to go ahead with the scrapping scheme because HoTWire didn't care. If all those threads hadn't been sent to the whinge bin we would be introducing free tax for cars modified with cut springs and banded steels as of tomorrow rather than going ahead with the (not for finacial reasons at all, honestly) scrapping scheme". Remember, it's all HoTWires fault.
