WARNING - LONG THREAD! ;D This is basically a "short" summary of the 19 page project thread I have on the VOC forums and the RWD volvos forums. I'll add proper updates as and when they come though in future.
OK - here it is. "Thor" my Volvo 244DL with a lot of history!
It was my Grandads car from new (Frank Haigh - RIP) and was used to tow the caravan all over europe. This car has seen some fabulous places...
My Grandad (other than the 600 miles dealer service) did all maintainance, rust proofing, repairs etc himself and did a very good job of anything he did. Shame he didnt use genuine volvo though
Heres some photos of "Thor" back in his day....
My Grandad passed away 29/08/2002 and I inherited the car. It wasnt left in the will to me or anything like that - it just stood in the garage while the next summer or so and I began to take an interest more and more and the car was given to me.
A small amount of corrosion was found in the two usual rust spots of the early 200 series'. A bit next to the mud flaps on the spare wheel wells, and a bit on the rear "sill" next to the bumper. Unfortunately neither me or my Dad can weld so filling was the only option really (could hardly nececitate having someone weld it at the age of 12!). Since doing this though ive got a lot more experience etc and when it starts to come through again I'm going to budget for all corrosion cutting out, welding, and spraying professionally. That way I could pretty much say it was in the top 10 200 series volvos in the UK, condition wise.
Bought a set of GLT model "Virgo" alloy wheels and refurbed them. I hate steels.
After refurb:
With a bit of financial help from my Nan seen as she still takes an interest in the car, I had the slightly pitted aluminium bumpers powder coated in "classic [non metallic] silver"
Some general shots of the rest of the car
After a poor effort at polishing the cam cover
Fitted a JVC radio:
Put some original volvo speakers in instead of the horrible 80s Hitachi ones:
Fitted an accessory coin tray:
Fitted a new rev meter to replace old faulty one
Fitted a VOC badge:
Fitted a new door pocket to replace old broken one:
Fitted a new front number plate as old one had leaked in
Started to modify a genuine volvo accessory snow cap
On this pic of someone elses 240 you can see that 1. There is the wiper recess for a LHD car, and 2. There is enough clearance for the RHD wipers.
I stuck a piece of plastic underneath the recess to give the filler more area to stick to and make it more secure. I then filled the recess with ordinary body filler several times.
Finished it off:
Fitted:
Fitted exhaust tip:
Gave my new mud flaps a good clean with some jif and masked the top edge off as I wanted to paint it as it wasnt very neat:
Painted them with tyre paint:
Fitted them:
Re-undersealed the car:
Fitted some original equipment headlamp wiper washers. The originals had obviously packed up and my grandad had removed them with a view to them being a bit of a gimmick.
Painted front calipers:
Painted a little area that was t cutted too much after we painted the wing:
I'll continue this in a new post to allow you to be commenting and so that this one is 'saved'
