What with Tony ripping the ar$e out of the motorist with his fuel tax, I've been musing with the idea of running an alcohol-fuelled car. I looked at quite a few websites, and some go into loads of detail on how to go about converting your car. It's a bit more involved than switching to bio-diesel, but perfectly possible. The main obstacles are cold-starting (but that could be done on petrol, then switch to alcohol once it's warm), and the carburation - alcohol needs 9:1 ratio rather than 14.7:1 for regular petrol. Then of course you need a source of alcohol - some of the guys in the US build their own stills and fill up from there (!) So come on... shoot me down in flames before I do it! ;D

Two problems I can see with this are insurance and tax.
I know LPG and Veggie oil both need to have the completed systems checked by a "competent person" before insurance companies will cover them so alcohol I would have is the same. The premium also goes up by 15-30% depending on the company. With vegetable oil you have to pay tax of 28p per litre on all the oil you use so again I would have thought this would be the same.(admittedly there is a lot of scope for how much you actually declare to customs and excise).
Of course if you didnt declare the mods then these points wouldnt be a problem unless you got caught ;D

Had an Italian girlfriend once. Used to use some homemade wine in the tank every once in a while. Made for a happy car.

Poutine rocks.
But I meant Poteen (or Pocheen).
Basically it's fermented grain and/or potatoes and is regularly above 90% ABV.
