OK, tempting though it was just to drive the Laurel into the Trent today I have decided that attempting to repair the car is a better approach than insurance fraud.
So basically I have "had a look" myself which is basically me grabbing a cup of tea, popping the hood and looking at a serpant's lair of pipes and wiring and thinking: **** me, what does that all do? What was wrong with carburettors anyway?
So I then closed the bonnet again and checked how far it is to walk back from the Trent...
Too far.
So anyone recommend someone who can cheaply and quickly fix my Nissan?
This is my daily driver and as such needs to be drivable. I don't have time or inclination to funk about with it myself.
Symptom: car will not idle when warm. car will not run on all 6 cylinders at less than 2500 RPM. Exhaust smokes on "accleration". Car misfires violently on part throttle cruise.
Mr Datman thinks it could be a jammed EGR valve, an air leak or a bad sensor connection or something like that.
Who can say? Its just a load of pipes and electric junk as far as I can tell.
I wish I bought a Morris Minor or something instead. I can just about get my head round that level of technology. I hate all this modern stuff.

F-in-L's works at an old style garage that deals with everything from daily runners to quite exotic stuff - older gents that actually know how to repair/rebuild things, but also have various whizzy technology things for injection (and a young lad that knows how to use them). Not particularly cheap hourly rate, but I KNOW they wouldn't rip you off.

I could take it back up my mates garage in Bulwell and see if I can get their courtesy car again, but even the discounted hourly rate is more than I could handle at the mo.
I guess I'm after one of those chaps who comes fixes it on your drive type deal. But reliable.

I know you don't want to be bothered with it yourself but the symtoms sound awfully like a split breather pipe.
Air leaks affect things like absolute gosh darnage and it's very easy to blame 'that fandangled computer wotsit thingy'. Try wiggling the anything that looks like it comes off the block, head or inlet manifold and see if the symptoms changed. A squirt of ether around often decects vac leaks too as the engine will pick up.

Best thing to do is get some esy start or something along those lines, and give it little squirts (small to avert explosions!) at joins and vacuum pipes. A leak will show it's self with a change in the engine noise or RPM.

Paulb just spent a while going over all the hoses, connections, and what not. Other than its misfiring like a sod we don't know whats causing it.
It may not be the fandangled computer causing it, but old school cars don't have 5 miles of vacuum hose, all those sensors and wires... Meh.
I might try limp it round to the local village garage for them to look at it. Meh x2

To me, it sounds like it's hugely rich. What are the plugs like? They're a good indication of the condition of the EFI.
It might be worth changing the plug leads - an EFI engine will cope fairly well with poor plug leads, but won't be perfect.
Things that could make it run rich: -Dodgy mass airflow meter/connection -dodgy water temp sensor (there are probably two - one for the gauge and one for the ECU, which will probably control the cooling fan too), or connection to it. -Dodgy Lambda sensor/connection
It could be the ECU, but I doubt it. If it's being sent the wrong information it's not going to be able to do the right things.

Bridge Automotive in Basford 0115 9786514 are great on cars of this era.
I have always used them on my older cars and had great service at great prices - there is also something interesting to look at in there as well!
The owner used to run a Lotus Sunbeam and knows his stuff!
