Random post-pub thought... Can you chrome plastic? for example, a front grille or bit of trim or something? Or, what's that chrome spray-paint like? Any good? Just ideas forming slowly in the back of my ever-enquiring mind And no, it's not for the Golf!

Yeah, but can it be done at home (or by a chromers)? The chromed plastic bumpers on my Corgi Mk3 Cortina Police car that I have to hand are proof that it can be done on an industrial/manufacturing scale

The chrome spray-on stuff is a bit wibblepoo, to be honest. Well, the ones I've used anyways. Not sure what the industrial process consists of.... interesting thought!

You can get mirrored vinyl, like signwriters use, it just needs a bit of heat to get it to form to the shape of what you're covering. It's quite brittle though, so you'd need to be careful

I've always woundered about whats involved with chroming plastic due to making many model kits/scratcbuilding model vehicles.
So called 'Chrome' effect paint they sell in car accessory stores is (as BenzBoy stated) total 's****'. I tried a few in the past and they are all just a form of (over priced) silver paint.

big wig in da house: not sure of what the process is though. How they chrome the parts on plastic models I have no clue to but my personal painter, PellePlast has specialized in water based acrylic paint, not cheap though, an average ½ liter will run you somewhere between 300 - 500 Euros and there are these flip/flop paints in way cool colours and there's also a 2-step paint & clear that gives exact the same chrome finish as on the parts of a plastic modell. This procedure is beeing used by a many of the MC & Scooter manufaturers today, Moto Guzzi has a bunch och chromed plastic that's done this way and we have seen no chiping but it's quite sensitive to scratches. I guess it would be way to expensive to do on one or a couple parts since just the paint will cost a bunch but done in large qvolumes it's doable. Go out and find a bike or car painter that deals with water based acrylics and he should be able to tell more.... I have a KBC VR7 helmet in chrome that's done this way by KBC in Korea and it's a girl-magnet!!!! PellePlast has done some way cool stuff with these paint, one bike (sadly I cant find pix of it), the tank & fenders was painted in white perl after it dryed PellePlast filled the bathtub with water and dropped several blobbs of paint in the water after that he dipped the parts in the paint/water and the water flows off while the paint sticks to the parts in an ultra cool "tie dye" fashion, it has a real 60's Hippie look!!!! This is NOT to be compared to "chrome effect" paint wich is curse word in my book......

Have a look in the upper right hand corner of this pic,at the sign advertising "electroless Chrome plating" .This is a fairly recent process and these guys can Chrome anything If it is a tangible object ....it can be chromed. The products I have seen done by these guys are amazing!,they can do it in different colours and can put little graphics on wheels etc in a contrasting coloured chrome. And it's far more durable than regular chrome as done by electroplating. ;D

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.
