Does anyone know if it's possible to increase the offset of a wheel by perhaps machining the mounting face, or would this be incredibly dangerous (when i say increasing the offset i mean bringing the wheel further into the arch)

most aftermarket alloy wheels have an area in the centre that is designed to be easilly cut back to alter the offset. The thing is it may not have enough or indeed any material left to remove. For major changes in offset a totally different casting will be used.

As long as you weren't taking too much metal off it shouldn't be a major problem.... but you'd have to careful in how you set the wheel up to mill it off.... it'd be quite easy to seriously undermine the balance and / or stuctural integrity of the wheel... You say you want to move the wheel closer into the arch, which would imply you have problems with them fouling the arches. Would it not be easier to modify the arches in some way? Rolling the outer lip can prevent scuffage and is pretty easily done. Also, is there any benefit from running different profile tyres or a narrower (stretched) section to prevent fouling?

i'd be a bit wary about running a stretched tyre to prevent fouling - it might stop the rubbing but if you did hit a big enough bump to push the wheel right up into the arch, you'd find that the arch would hit the sidewall and not the tread - i wouldn't have thought the sidewall would be designed for that kind of impact.
as for the original question.... how many mm are you talking?

Modifiy/roll the arch, or even fit (which the japs are doing with retro cars) 'rivet on' arch flares, which actually look quite effective with a wide wheel. With regard to these arch flares does anyone know who produces them in Britain. Picture illustrates the style of arch flare I mean (and curious myself of where to obtain).

I had quite a large amount milled off my AMG replicas to clear the sliding door on my old T25: That said, there was a lot there to mill the flat face design meant that most of the offset was 'on the back'.

They do look very similar to some of the Mini ones, may be worth checking out MiniSport etc ..
