Hi I love what you have done, but it's not for me. I'm not a great lover of modern art, maybe my mind just doesn't work like that, but I have the appreciation for the work and effort that has gone into these types of sculpture, great work and good luck with the A levels.
Cheers,
Stu.

Congrats! It started out as some scrap on a stick, and turned out to be proper art. I used to dabble in art, a long time ago, and you make me think there is a future in modern art...
Thank you

ok, i gotta ramble...
first, i really don't get it. I understand what you've you've 'symbolised'. But that aside, how are you supposed to learn the significance of it? I couldn't tell it was the UK shape, and the link to the industry was far too far a leap for my mind to make.
I'll interlude at this point that I'm a great fan of car art, fine art, and classical styles but modern art just makes me puke as a rule. I usually don't get what modern art pieces are about which may be what annoys me as I'm really quite logical and intelligent, so it's like an insult to me that whatever 'art' i'm looking at has a meaning so obscure I cant grasp it.
Anyway I can't help feeling it would have been less of a mind-leap had the parts used been more recognisable as old car pieces. I dunno. I guess I just would like to know how the viewer is meant to make the connection - if I saw that in a gallery, without you standing next to me, how would I identify it and it's significance?

must be a philistine but it still looks like a pile of scrap & like above if i've got to be told what it is i can't see how its done its job? my local shreders needs to be re classified as an art gallery & no i'm not saying if it isn't a bowl of fruit it can't be art.

Fair and valid points. To be honest I have the same problems with most "modern" art. But the point is it doesn't really matter about the meaning, it's a sculpture in it's own right without any meaning. It's a bit like poetry, you can take it at face value and either like it or not just on how it sounds or whatever, but you can also read into it and find symbolism which enriches the experience of it.

Art as a whole is the interpretation or symbolism of the world surrounding the artist, or their perception of it. There is no such thing as a meaningless piece - the creator always has a reason for their work - even if it is to make the wall less shabby, or just to waste some time, or to express their thoughts. Of all good art I can bring to mind, there is always a primary reason/function of the piece. What should be allowed to be harder to interpret is the artists inspiration, meanings and desired projection - or even secondary or hidden reasons/functions. But you shouldn't have to take more than 20 seconds trying to find the primary function of the art, and art without function is really just, well, not art.

Your first point is that art should have a meaning or purpose or it's not art, but art just for the sake of looking good is also art? That is exactly what I meant by it is a piece of art in it's own right without any meaning, is that it is without any deeper meaning other than "that looks cool" etc. even if you think it looks **** because that is subjective. And secondly, why have you designated a period of 20seconds to work out a piece of arts meaning? Surely the longer a piece of art takes you to work out the more value you have got from it. Art galleries would be boring if you just walked around and each picture/piece only held your interest for 20seconds.
