I want to make a gokart for my nephew, I noticed a few mopeds in my regular scrapyard and got this honda melody for £30. It was missing the front wheel and drive belt cover which was a bit of a shame I took the engine and loom out and threw the rest away. I took it apart a bit and gave it a bit of a clean up as it was really filthy, looks like some kids had nicked it and thrashed it round a field or something. The best thing about using a moped is that everything I need is there, wiring, control cables, clutch and brake (built into rear hub), I can even keep the lights to use on the kart! I got some wheels today, the front ones are barrow wheels (red) and the rears are trailer wheels, I got them quite cheap but had to buy one new rear wheel to make up the set, the spoked wheel is off the moped. My mate came over today and we put it in the vice and connected it all up to try it out, It started after about 3 cranks! even with its dirty old spark plug, thats Hondas for you! Since the vid I have stuck the exhaust on and sorted the throttle cable out and now it runs smoother and starts on the button!

I have got that book by Ron champion, build a buggy for under £100 (yeah right!) I will keep it simple, I have got some 40mm box section steel to make the basic chassis, its a bit heavy but I am thinking my Nephew will grow fast and this kart could last him a long time if I make it strong and big enough to fit a bigger seat and engine and move the pedals forward when he grows up a little.
I am tempted to attempt a rudimentary rear trailing arm suspension using a small motorbike shock/spring unit I have.
I am looking for some austin mini hubs to fit these rear wheels to 4x4"pcd.
I am planning to weld a v belt pulley to the old moped wheel hub (brake drum) after I cut the spokes and outer rim off to drive the axle.

What!! There is another one there for sale in the scrapyard complete with security chain and missing front wheel. I was tempted to grab it for the sake of having another engine/transmission. You may have just helped me make up my mind I am thinking of making a powered wheelbarrow as I am a gardener and have to barrow tons of manure about the place to put on the roses.

More parts aquired, I went to look at a job today in an old abandoned sevice shop and found some useful stuff including.... steering wheel from a boat and a plastic seat. bearings for the axle from this large extractor unit. and would you believe it.... some foot pedals. Also found Donald cox the smelly fox other curse word... honda piston kit, not for a melody but I have had some good luck already. 2 whacking great big compressors

I think it must have got hit by by a car and ran in there, I had had to move it outside sooner rather than later it stank and was full of maggots.
