Saw this for sale on the side of the road this weekend along with some other junk. I don't think I will use it but its just nice, it is a Union pillar drill, it has an arm at the top operated by a cam built into the drive gear that pulls on another gear to lower the chuck as the drill operates. Gave it a bit of a clean up, I was thinking about dismantling it ans painting all the cast parts with black hammerite, but I kind of like it how it is.

thats really cool, but unless i'm stupid, how are you supposed to turn both handles at the same time?

you don't, the little arm works backwards and forwards and turns the horizontal gear bit by bit

thats really cool, but unless i'm stupid, how are you supposed to turn both handles at the same time? If I have got this right there is a mechanism which supplies a constant downwards pressure on the drill bit as the drill handle is turned. The handle at the top is for raising the drill bit. It is an interesting bit of historical kit

Ive got one of those in my garage Its connected to the steel column holding up the living room floor. As the garage is the complete ground floor of my house. You can hear and feel when the drills going, in the living room.
