Hi all, I lent my Clarke MIG welder to a neighbour as he needed to do some repairs on his motor, it's a gas/gasless type. Anyhoo, it was working with no problem & it cut out. Tried the obvious stuff, checked the fuse in the plug & checked the extension lead etc...But there's still noting happening, the wire feed isn't working either. I have noticed that on the tip of the welding gun there's a hole which looks like it's been burnt into the tip, possibly from some weld dropping on it. the welder isn't particulary old & hasn't had much use. Just wondering if anyone may know what's up with it or has it happened to you? I can't find anyone local that could repair it & I don't want to bin it as I hadn't even used the dam thing myself! Any help or pointers would be appreciated, thanks in advance. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Check none of the rocker swithes (power setting) are in a 'halfway' position. Take the cover off the side and look for any wires that have come loose or any obvious signs of component failure. Check the switch in the torch is working. They're fairly basic machines, not a huge amount to go wrong.

Thanks for the replies, I don't recall the fan running to be honest but I'll check tonight. I've taken the side of & had a look around, can't see any obvious sign of component failure.....Well nothing burnt anyway, I'd check the rockers switches if I knew what they were. ;D According to my neighbour he was welding a plate with it & it just shut off.

I thought it could be a 'trip switch' of some kind (bloody health & safety) ;D Couldn't see any obvious switches though ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) didn't notice any in line fuses anywhere, the fuse in the plug was fine as I tested it with one that was working in something else. It's annoying as the chap I brought it from had it from new & only welded a few plates on his VW for it's MOT. I brought it from him & didn't use it, but knew I'd need one one day. Lent it to the neighbour now it's dead, becuase it's had little use I'd like to get it fixed rather than buy another one. ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png)

Id go with internal cutout/thermal switch or a fusable link inside too. The burnt tip you mentioned? is the wire burnt back inside the tip (cos if it is I'm betting thats why it tripped)

You haven't just bunged the tip up? You say the wire doesn't feed does it sound like it's trying to or is the whole thing totally dead?

Nope, it's not trying to feed the wire......No noise or anything, got back late tonight so haven't been in the shed, will do tomorrow though! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Ignore the last post, it has power, the fan is spinning up and the mechanism that feeds the wire is working but for some reason the wire isn't coming through. It's lined up in the groove and it will come through if I pull it through whilst pulling the trigger, it's like there's a blockage somewhere.
BTW it's a Clarke MIG 105EN Turbo...........I'm guessing the fan mean's it's a turbo! ;D

My new welder died soon after I got it ... It was just a poor connection inside where some chunky wires went into a relay. Check all the easy to check connections.

ends blocked, unscrew the copper tip and ull see the wire is stuck inside it.

As above, sounds like the wire has welded itself to the 'tip' (small brass thing which transmits the power to the wire as it feeds through). Take off the chrome metal shroud at the end of the gun (unscrews) and you'll see it. You should be able, with a bit of twisting against the wire, to unscrew the tip and pull a bit of wire through to be able to snip it off. If you're lucky the wire will pull out of the tip and you can reuse it, if you're not you'll need a new tip.
This problem is caused by the wire burning back into the gun faster than it comes out, caused by the wire feed setting being too slow *

Thank you, I've removed the tip & brass piece. The brass piece has a hole burnt through it so I'll replace that when I can find a replacement part & see how she goes. I'd say you're right about the speed, it was set between 1 & 2 ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)
