The other week I had to take a friends (not in anyway retro) late 90's car for MOT (Which I knew was not ideling right, revs seemed to 'bounce' from 500 rpm to 900 rpm when stationary).
During the MOT I was informed that it only just passed the emmission test, naturally I jumped to the conclusion that the Cat or Lamba sensor was due for replacement (i always presume the worse :. But fair play to the garage (who I use anyway) they explained it wasn't that, they pointed out due to the car being low milage and only run round town that it would be a little 'choked up' around the valves and injector area; hence the bad ideling I was muttering about as well. The mechanic who I know and use said put a small bottle of 'Fo-Tec' petrol additive in the tank when half full/half empty (only need to do it once a year ).
Now I naturally pointed out i'm not a believer of these 'So-called' additives (along with these 'bolt on' fuel economy improvers, balls in petrol tank, etc and so on) and he agreed but on this occasion he said try it ...so I did ...a week later mates car is running ace
...I would never have believed it!
So my question to you guys and gals is what are your views on some of these additives you can buy to pour in the tank occasionally to 'supposidly' clean and aid running.
Plus may long term damage result?
The stuff I was told to use (and did) is Fo-Tec at £7.70 a bottle.
