So do you guys have to get SMOG tests for your cars in Europe like we have to here in California? (Every 2 years for cars made after 1975) Especially in Southern California, we can get tickets for exhaust noise, car's too low (or too high), etc. I heard they're just gonna crack down on anybody with modified cars now.... That's one thing I hate about Cali.

we have emissions tests within the yearly MoT for CO but that's about it, and they differ it based on the age of the vehicle. they also visually check for smoke but that's down to the individual MoT tester to decide. For 1975 to 1986 vehicles, CO levels must be below 4.5% From 1986 to 1992, it's 3.5% After 1992 every car is different and the test station has a database of what the levels should be, but it's usually around 0.5% as these cars should all be fitted with catalytic converters. My polo just borderline failed with about 0.6%.... until i pointed out it was a 1991 model and the catalyst was in the bin. passed with flying colours they also check for hydrocarbons - 1200ppm for cars before 1992, therafter again it's dependant on model but usually around 200ppm. we get tickets for excessive noise and dangerous condition but typically only if you're driving like a moron (aka 'croozin'') and give the cops a reason to pull you. you can get away with most things for the MoT test, it has to be VERY noisy to fail on that and even though my polo was too low to go on the ramps without being lifted by the wheelarches, it still passed
