Started with the battery to boot conversion today. Slit the rubber gromet in the engine bay and ran the cable up behind the glove box and through the hole The rest is fed under the passenger side carpet and under the seat tunnel. Rained off after that so will have to finish it another time

Quiet at work today so did a bit of prep work on the engine (got them to let me store it there for now ) I found out that I'm very good at taking things off, just hope it works the other way round when it comes to it! Torque convertor and drivewheel off, took some facking doing as they were all lock-tightened in. My backs deffo suffering after it. Wonder if they'd be worth flogging on Ebays? Oil cooler off nice and easy. Is there an attachment for the oil filter on the E21 engines that would screw into where this came out? Any my windschutzscheiben-dichtung came too, woo hoo! Half the price pretty much of the orrible dealer. Gunked all the block afterwards, that stuff is awesome. Just need to autosol the head with a drill and mop now and it'll look pretty sweetables.

Made some progress with the engine swap over the past few weeks. Renting out a nice little workshop so its made life a whole lot easier. Here's some pics anyways as i know there far more interesting that paragraphs of shat Notice new MiM alloy ont front....got a shaweet set for pennies so they'll be going on when its all ready Bonnet and bits off Carb, manifold etc off New engine moved from work to the fantasy factory Old engine out Bit of a clean New clutch, water pump, sump on new engine with a lick of paint Car feeling very sorry for itself... From this point on the project has come to a halt though. Once it cleaned 30 years worth of curse word away i discovered a few nasties. The worst being a hole in the chassis tunnel. Grinded it all back, used some rust killer and then anti rust primered it I know the sensible thing would be to cut this out and bob a new section in but i need to get this engine in and ready for summer. Think I'm just going to patch this over and do a proper job somewhere down the line when i (hopefully) get decent at welding. Until thats sorted I'm just going to clean her up and give the engine bay a lick of paint. Need to move the battery to the boot and swap the fuel pump for an E30 one which i will try get done this weekend.

sweet e21 dude, really wanna swap out the 1800 m10 in mine but really not sure what route to go engine eise....mite just slap a set of r6 carbs on it n a mild cam....? Keep up the good work

You could bolt in a 320/6 or a 323 subframe and bang a 170bhp 325 engine in like the one I'm using. Either that or a newer injection M10 from an E30 ? I struggled with my shiddy Solex 4A1 carb for far too long

Hell Lownslow, is that your E21 in the sig ?? Well nice motor!! Update on the build... Headlight brackets and cups refurbed, front of car has been sprayed too to tidy it up Knackerd drain channels and sunroof seal done Welding done New fuel pump in Manifolds sprayed, new heatshields, exhaust back on Wiring more or less done, bracket made up for air flow meter and air filter So, happy days!!! Just need to sort a live out for the fuel pump, re-connect the fuel and water pipes, get a new battery and fingers crossed.....she should fire up!!! This Sunday is D-Day. Pretty exited now

Under the inlet manifold you'll see a round multi-plug which is the wiring for the injectors. Because of where it is, it gets covered in crud and the connections corrode with bad misfires as a consequence. It's worth giving it a good clean and liberal dose of WD or Duck-oil for protection. Good work though my man! You'll soon be chuckling as you bury your right foot in the carpet.

Yeah, i know the one. The bloke i got the loom off had cut the original plug off and connected a different one as it must have corroded and knackered it up. Ive shortened it a bit more and soldered the wires together. The wires were a bit black and curse word though so will have to see how good of a connection it is.

An update and a few more pics while I'm sat here bored stiff Wiring spliced and tidied up with conduit stuff Braket made to hold air meter. New filter and heat shield on that too. Battery bolted in and strapped down Bonnet sprayed and back on finally Interior back in. Needs a reet good clean now And i video of the thing working MOT time now. Just need to get rid of my van first which needs some work

Thanks. Looking forward to getting it out. Driven it about a meter so far Got a good quality chipped ecu from the guy i got the engine off, so I'm expecting it to be a bit quick. They only weigh just over a ton. A nice fun car hopefully!

I put not this, but something very similar on my dream cars list. The 323 alpina Is it much harder to fit the 3.5 lump though?

Dam nice car! They go for some serious brass. Not sure about the 3.5 swap. To be honest, the engine swap on mine is the first major mechanical thing ive ever done. One of the main reasons I bought a classic was to learn a bit about mechanics so I'm just feeling it out as I go along. Theres a bloke on the E21 forum at the minute who's just fitted a 2.8 M52 engine which I expect to be pretty fooking fast. That looks to be a good route to go

Only advice I can give you on engine upgrades is to make sure the engine mounts are
a. strong enough to stop the heavier new engine moving b. strong enough for holding the engine when you put your foot down - original engine mounts are usually no good if moving from one engine to another.
Check cooling is still going to work properly.
The later engines with the 16v head are going to be harder to fit under the bonnet because they're bigger at the top. I'm sure it fits.

M30 engines are do'able but a) they're bigger & heavier b) the mounts and required manifold for the exhaust are pretty expensive and c) they're getting harder to find. There's no denying the performance they offer though and shed loads of torque. My TWR version was built to 240bhp specification and would hit 60 in 5 seconds! The later engines with 16V drop in easily once you modify the sump and the same goes for the 24V six pots. The six pot also requires an e34 sump & extended oil pick-up pipe. Both use 323 mounts M42 equipped track car M52 / 2.8 daily driver
