just spent an hour fitting my latest eBay purchase... an original 1980's Blaupunkt Melbourne MR23 head unit as originally fitted to the Scirocco. Cost me a quid though! and i sold the piece of tat JVC cd-tuner i had in it before for £45 hehe i was just about to start effing and blinding about the dodgy geezer who's hacked around with the wiring, then i realised it looks for all the world like it's original, hacked at the dealer perhaps? it has solder joints to make it 4-speaker, all looks a bit odd!anyway save for the lack of front speakers (paper cones + leaky door rubbers = soggy sound) which will get sorted soon, it looks fab!

that's the chicken!
erm, curse word all with the radio - i think he just didn't plug an aerial in, as he only bench-tested it. it gets fm in lovely stereo, and lw - can't find any mw stations but there's a trimmer on the back to help with that.
the button for casette eject and turning over are jammed, but i think it's a mechanical problem as they just won't go in - fairly easy to fix. if all else fails there's another one on ebay ending soon! the casette pops out when you turn it off anyway.
sounds pretty good though, just gotta find some front speakers. 5x7" ones.

Sounds good. I recently put back the original stereo in the Mk1 Polo, that's a blaupunkt LW/MW with no FM or tape though! Single oval 6x4 speaker in the fake walnut dash... oh yes!

were they fitted in early sierras too, there was one in my mothers blokes sierra that i believe was the same, and original ford fit , couple years before the digital ones, which were also very good if u got one from a high spec model, some also had a seperate amp too!

yeah i remember lusting after one of the seperate amp jobbies - the 2007? cos it all looked so powerful in the brochure when my mum bought a escort LX in '88
gonna whip the unit out tomorrow and get my screwdriver onto it, see if i can't make those buttons work. would love to wire in a hidden aux input too, round the back, to plug an mp3 player into - it's alright going retro but i don't own any casettes!!

Excellent work Pillock! I always think its nicer to have an in-keeping stereo in the dash of a retro car, rather than some state-of-the-art modern thing flashing away in the middle of the dash I was going to try and install a line-in cable, into the head unit that I fitted into my glovebox - but splitting the case looked more hassle than it was worth Stu - you've got a Blaupunkt twin knob jobbie (so to speak ) In your Polo? Mines a Philips - you'd have thought they would have been the same?

Pillock, JBL do some really good speakers that'll pop in rocco doors, they are the same as the ones that mark 2 goofs have in the back as well ain't they?
I've got a set here, I'll get the numbers off them and let you know on Monday.

i've seen some JBL ones in Hellfords but they were mega-bucks special order. I've also seen some in the CPC catalogue (industrial/electronics supplies) - not branded but twin cone 5x7" for a tenner apiece. just need to find someone with an account!

Dan: Yeah, I will take a pic. I assume it's original as the service book has the original manual for the radio in it. Also, a local VW mechanic I sometimes go to for big jobs served his apprenticeship when Mk1 Polo's had just come out - he told me that the radio was original when he saw it, and that some really top models even had FM! Not sure if that's right, will check the brochure
