Everybody so far has commented on the look of the car, which is fair enough - but what about the mechanicals? e.g. I'm on the "love" side of the line that divides opinions on the jaguar E-type, I doubt I would touch the "look", but I would fit S3 XJ electronic ignition if I owned a 3.8/4.2, or an HE spec engine if I owned a V12.
The way I see it, there's always SOMETHING that will make a factory car better for you personally, as they are not designed to your personal specification in the first place - whether you want to modify or preserve as standard is then a choice?

Of all the people here I wondered if it would be you to correct my memory! Damn memory! From memory it was one of the Italian built bodies that was the taller of the cars? Ed, you're probably right on that. Gurney needed the "bubble" blister on the GT40. So makes sense! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

This one is a funny one, the 300ZX/Fairlady Z (Z32 generation). ![](http://www.yugobernie.com/images/JDM_Brochure/change.gif) It actually took a lot of effort to find a decent picture of one unmodified - for some reason the bulk of owners LOVE to do stuff to them visually and I can't for the life of me figure out why. They look utterly fantastic, I even like the standard wheels to be honest, though I don't think changing the wheels ruins it. What I can't understand is why people want to bodykit them up, change the super-cool back lights to different ones, take the badge off the front so it looks awkward, respray them different colours, etc. They look utterly superb already, the proportions are 100%, everything is balanced out, just leave the sodding things alone. CHEERS!

They can all be improved on, its personal taste afterall! Personally I think Shelby daytona's and Ferrari 250SWB's cant be improved upon MUCH, they are pretty close to being perfect to me! The daytona posted earlier is a replica from a company called Factory Five (who are currently being sued funnily enough by Caroll Shelby for design infringement). They use a Jaguar XJS screen and are to be honest very different from the originals. And of the originals EVERY one (6 or so) were different, roof lines differed as they made them in two different factories( uk and italy!)...etc etc. As a side note on that, one driver, I forget if it was Bob Bondurant or Dan Gurney, preferred one daytona over the rest as it was built in Italy with a higher roof (they took some "artistic license" in building it) as he was a tall fella! I love the originals, here's the "lost daytona" ![](http://jimsgarage.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/cobra_daytona_2287a.jpg) How can he sue them? He didn't design the Cobra base car. He just shoved a huge V8 in a british sports car. AC Ace ![](http://www.motorbase.com/uploads/ccfs/2009/02/25/fs_0557674001235495905.jpg) AC Cobra ![](http://www.topclassiccars.com/car-pictures/ac-cobra-289.png)

Personally and this is only personally I think the Ferrari 212 Vignale Spider is just about spot on (even with the wire wheels and ride height) ![](http://digilander.libero.it/Logiko2031/1951%20Ferrari%20212%20Export%20Vignale%20Spyder.jpg) I think I've just had an organism! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Actually just an inch or so lower on the front would be just perfect. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

You'd really drop that Maser, and replace those wheels? That would be tampering with the most perfect creation.... Yes, and not only that, but i'd replace the two sidepipes with one unit, fit smaller wheels with less profile, and run closer to the ground. looks like a 4x4 from here, and far too much like a Ferrari 250 testarossa for my liking. absolutely nothing I would change on a shelby daytona I was well and truly in the 'everything is better with wheels and a slam' camp, but you I think you just proved me wrong. so its got the slam and wheels already, but look at that back panel. Flat metal and lucas tail-lights? please? it's like the designer forgot about the back end and just finished the mock-up with a straight-rule. needs some flair!

E30 M3 Evo: ![](http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/uploads/new/148915.jpg) I'd love to agree, that is a beautiful car, but wheels and stick apply here too. Maybe not as much, but imagine a nice set of BBS splits, 1 inch bigger in diameter and width and 20mm off the height. I think of wheels and stick as making the car more like the designer would have wanted it, before it was diluted and make nice to drive and capable of negotiating speed bumps. I suppose this is not so much the case of flamboyant Italian sportscars, but I'm sure it applies to a lot of things.

Yeah, that's right.....I'm feeling the Zagato love tonight! Tomorrow - Bertone, then maybe some Sbarro after that?? Proper cider/monitor interface ;D There hasn't been a car yet that couldn't be improved by modifying, don't forget the modifications needn't be aesthetic. This for instance is truly a thing of beauty ![](http://digilander.libero.it/Logiko2031/1951%20Ferrari%20212%20Export%20Vignale%20Spyder.jpg) But I can't help thinking that if it were mine I'd not be able to resist the temptation to bring the brakes and suspension up to date at least. I'd like to imagine that they're beautifully made and engineered, but technology has moved on a fair way since then and I'd want to enjoy driving it. And if I'm totally honest I probably would ditch the wires, for steels with lower profiles and chrome centre cap ufo thingies.

If car ownership was all about "improvement", then we'd all own vastly newer cars.
That isn't the only kick I get out of retro motoring. I have different objectives with different cars in my fleet.
Some are brought to as close to state of the art as possible, making it a modern in an old shell.
Some are nut & bolt restorations, so I can experience vintage motoring as it existed at the time of new manufacture. This can be a VERY satisfying ethic. This is the ethic behind the other Goodwood festival event, for example.
Some are brought to a specific standard of homologation, as for rallye or roadrace, either current or historic.
Some are done as "freaks", for the kick of doing something extreme, unusual, or to test-bed a concept.
Some are done for meager reliable transportation, without a thought as to anything but the exigencies of the moment.
