been offered on through a guy at work, and I'm tempted is there anything i need to look out for on them? any areas to check? Its had the engine rebuilt with a load of new bits, and needs a few bits refitting as its been off the road for a while. any idea of a rough price? it sounds pretty good Mike

cheap your looking at 5k, but can carry on up to about 15-20k for a minty spangly rs500.
tbh, if your looking at the lower end of the scale, its going to have been caned at some point in its life. so check for the usual things that go on thraped cars

rs500 overpriced. mythical cars, more suited to motorsport than the road. best left to collectors
3 door cossies nice. Sapphires, for some reason I like them lots. More sleepy.

RS500 is barely any different to a normal 3dr really. Hand built by TickFord though.
They are a bit of a mindfield really. I'd luck for rust, bad repairs and grenade engine tuning. Generally the 3drs are raising in price now since a great deal are being broken for parts or crashed. They tend to go for anything between 3K-10K depending on condition and spec.

got a bit more ifo on it, its an 85, in white, with a cage, all braided hoses etc. all suspension is painted black and the underside has been baremetalled and painted diamond white too. was sprayed in 1998 and been off the road since 2001 the engine is out at the mo, its been to peterborough rally spares for wrc pistons, bd14 cams, its got 10:1 comp and has been to fishers? in london for a lot of machining. theres receipts for about 2.5K needs the engine refitting and a few other recommissioning jobs. Its £2000 Mike

3 door cossies love them to bits especially a near standard one in moonstone, like one that one of the guys at work has its mint only obvious mod is a stainless exhaust so totally mint and its d reg,,,, but as said before keep an eye out for thrashed to an inch of its ife signs and check the suspension bushes as these take a hammering if trashed and its been tuned
Still i would have one in my garage

seems cheap - is it a genuine one (not a race built from a 1.6L shell)

even if its a 1600l id have it! for tht price you can stick originality tbh. cossie owners are probably the most anal of any car owners on the earth...they love thier originality hence youd be hard pushed to sell the car on if you wanted to for a good profit, however it does mean any genuine cossie stuff on the car will fetch a premium....and should cover the 2K in engine bits anyway. tbh if it goes like one and handles like one and looks like one, fo 2K your onto a winner

i'd deffo have it, after slapping him mildly for misleading you. £2k for a just-finished-cosworth-engined 3rd sherra is bloody good! plus it's got a cage and looks like it's been built by someone who has a good idea what should go into it.

You say it has a cage so is it a stripped interior or cosworth interior. Is it all cosworth running gear gearbox, diff suspension brakes. If its a cosworth engine and everything else stock then thats not so good. If its a type 9 sierra box then they cant handle the power of a cosworth for long before going bang. If the engines good though its definetely worth it just for that.
