On Saturday I got a call from a mate saying there were rally cars competing in Blackpool for the day, partly modern Evo and Subaru stuff, but some retro stuff too.
So I got a pass out of painting the back bedroom to have a run up to Pontins and have a look in the early afternoon.
When I arrived I wasn't sure if you had to pay an entry fee, so found a suitable grassy knoll looking over the fence at the back end of the course.
I don't know if anyone's been to pontins before, but seeing rally cars going hell for leather in between tightly packed slightly scruffy single storey chalets, and past the kids play area was a little surreal, but quite cool as you could get quite close to the action, and the walls seemed to amplify the noise! ;D. Anyway on to the pics and videos. (I apologise for the quality of the videos, my camera's far from good, and the operator's not much better) I can't work out how to get the videos upright, sorry
When I arrived, the sound of what I think was a BDA mk2 escort made me really grin:
Then next round the corner came a few Evo's, and then a Metro 6R4, another lovely noise:
Then a Mk1 Escort, Civic Type R and the earlier Mk2 Escort:
Then I moved inside the holiday park, right next to the play area where lots seemed to be happening:
Escort chasing:
Few more:
Then I changed spots again, and got this Fiesta XR2 giving it full commitment:
Then I resorted to photos.
A pair of Escorts:
XR2
Lupo and XR2
Waiting to go:
RR Car of the month - Toyota MR2!
Talbot Sunbeam (drove off before I got the camera fired up)
Then I had a wander through the pits:
Works Ford outfit:
They placed little boulders at the apex of all the corners to stop the drivers hitting the chalets. This proved a problem for some:
Another Escort on the way home:
I made a few retro spots on the way back to the car too:
Hello Integrale:
Hello Audi S2 Avant:
Tidy XR2:
And back at mine ;D
Hope you enjoyed that, my only wish was that I'd seen more of the 6R4
The outright leaderboard for the event when I left was as follows:
1. Nissan Sunny GTiR
2. Ex Peter Solberg works Impreza
3. Metro 6R4. (hero)
