Hi all
After a long time, we're just about to pull out the engine from TopTaff's HA van to create a propah retro motah.
Can anyone help? We're going to wrench a good 1256cc lump from TT's HC Viva to use, but:
Will the 1256 bolt straight in, using the original HA engine mounts?
Do we use the HA's 'box, or the one from the HC?
If we use the HC 'box, do we have to shorten the propshaft?
Is the HC's axle too wide to be used, and if so, will the HC diff drop into the HA's axle?
I'm right that HC's Rostyle wheels won't fit the HA aren't I?
Any help gratefully received as work starts in a couple of weeks!

I'm sure someone who's done this before will come along but for what it's worth I'd say the 1256 would drop straight in. I had a Viva that had the 1256 replaced with the 1159 for some reason and that used the Viva 'box.
I'd use the HA axle - unless you're looking for a higher top speed. The 1256 will give a big increase in acceleration with the HA axle.

From what I've read in magazine, the HA Viva used 2 different types of 'box. The van one has a longer tail-shaft (longer wheelbase?), which happens to be exactly the same as the HB/HC/Chevette, so no probs with the prop. The HB/HC axle is a lot wider than the HA and is coil-sprung, so it ain't exactly a bolt in swap. I'd use the HA axle with 13" rostyles and maybe 155X13v tyres to raise the gearing a tad. Maybe later HA vans had taller gearing? And I believe that the HC discs will fit the HA front suspension, after all the HA front clip is a popular choice (sorry) for rodded Pops, and lots of them have been fitted with Magnum front brakes. Ask around at the NSRA forum.

I think
HA wheels are 4x4" PCD (like minis and minors)
HC wheels are 4x100mm PCD (like VWs)
So no i don't think you can interchange

That may be a better option, it cost me about £150 for 6 bushes for the HC one.

that cross member looks a lot like pheonixc s piazzas one Looks to be quite a few differences dampers are on top of the wishbone on the piazza. Piazza has front and rear location arms one wishbone and one crossmember. There are no anti roll bar mounts and the crossmember fastening bolts. Need to see a chevette one as the general size and shape looks similar

I ran BMW 2002 steels (100mm) on my HC (4") with no problem. Personally I treat 100mm and 4" as the same and it's always worked for me. It's the same with 4.5"/114.3mm and 4.25"/108mm, in all but extreme precision circumstances they're just metricised versions of the original imperial measurement. ps. I put a (1256) Chevette gearbox in my (1159) HB with no changes, it worked perfectly - the only apparent difference being the lever being angled towards the driver slightly, but not enough to cause any problems.

There is a company called roadhouse selling eccentric PCD correction nuts to help in the fitting of rims when the PCD is out. Seem cheap enough but don't know what they are like

I'm pretty sure you'll find its the HC used, not the HA with altered brakes. I think the old Jago chassis, which lots of Pops were built around, were HA based. As far as I know 'Pop' Brown still sells new (transverse leaf) springs for that very application. I believe the brakes are interchangable though.

If you used nuts with floating seats you could get them to fit i think 0.8mm is enough differance to put on a wheel stud under alot of stress imo (differance bwetween 4" and 100mm is 1.6mm)

There are no anti roll bar mounts Unsure which unit you're referring to here but if it's the HC then yes it has but they're not too easy to see in the pic, unfortunately I don't have an anti roll bar to fit it yet.

The HC Viva is 4X4", The FE Victor was the first Vauxhall to use the 100mm PCD as it used the Opel Rekord floor-pan. Rodded Pops use the HA front end as it's about the right width, The HB/HC being a fair bit wider. My mate used a HB front end under his Pop and had to widen the wings by 2" even with Minor wheels on it. As far as I'm aware, the HC brakes are a bolt-on swap.
