A quick one, is etch primer, specifically the U-Pol stuff Halfords sell in the red tins, porous?
The tin says chromate free and corrosion preventative (or words to that effect).

probably.
Epoxy or 2 pack primer for some degree of waterproofness.

most primers are invaiably porous.. this is why they make a good base for paint to go onto and key to !!

2-pack primer is porous, just to warn ya's. I think Steve Lang on the NSRA forum said epoxy isn't porous, but better check that out than just take my word for it

The trailer that Nobody built for me survived outdoors for nearly 3 yrs in a quick lash of epoxy primer. Only smallest traces of rust appeared round the corners etc. Just a guess but with 2k thinners it comes out semi-glossy, Lechler with their own thinner comes out matt so poss absorbs a bit more? But they use epoxy on boats/ships etc.

Yeah, 2 pack is porus but not alot. Its fine outdoors but only for a little while.
Epoxy primer is the only waterproof primer i know of.

Ah red oxide, the great all rounder, i've had cars in grey and red oxide for ages, grey rusts like it aint even there, red oxide doesn't, it also has plasticiser in it and is great for base coating plastic parts, all my grills, wiper arms and bumper corners are just red oxide and satin black laid over it, lasted 2 years so far and so have the bare RO patches with no rust through at all Allways keep a tin in the garage

Can you put 2-pack, cellulose etc over the top of red oxide? Or does it react?

For places that are not going to be painted for a while I always use Red oxide! what he said ;D ;D I think you will find red oxide is an acrylic and celly paints will upset it, 2k should be ok. If it has been left for ages and was not too thickly applied it may be ok. I would flat it and leave the surface to reseal for a day then apply paint in thin dry coats to reduce reaction.
