Whats the current situation with regards new cars tax in belgium. How much cheaper are they than the UK now?

Whats the current situation with regards new cars tax in belgium. How much cheaper are they than the UK now? Most people here buy their cars new. Government pushes it really. You get lots of good deals and bonuses from the government if you buy a clean (relatively speaking of course) car instead of a polluting second hand one. Those bonuses get higher if you go for the cleanest catagory (best catagory is <1OO p.p.m. of CO2 per KM - only a few cars in there: Smart ForTwo Diesel, VW Lupo 3L, Audi A2 1.2, Toyota Prius... ). If you buy one of those you get about £2000 back from the Belgian Government. That's a lot on an £8000 car! Also, if you need finance it's really really cheap for new cars and more expensive for second hand. Same story with insurance. When I buy a new Clio I pay less insurance then when buying a one year old second hand one. If you buy new no MOT for 4 years. If you buy a second hand (even only 2 months old) the first thing it needs is an MOT and you have to go every year then. Unless you're an enthousiast and you go for a proper old car (like 10 years or more) it's not worth the hassle. Young second hand ones rarely are considered a good deal and so 65% of those goes abroad. Many times there's only like a grand difference on a car of a year old compared to a new one. I don't know whether they are still much cheaper here than in the UK (did a few good deals exporting new Mercs and Golfs then ;D ). It was like that a few years back but since then prices went up here. So I don't know now... |

Really? That's an interesting policy your government has, they really are making it awkward for those buying secondhand, I wonder if we've found a government more willing to get us all out of retro cars and into new ones than Tony & Co? ;D ;D  |

At the risk of straying off-topic, don't get me started on "economical" new cars - they're not, once all the factors of manufacturing pollution are put into the equasion! I don't know why governments ignore all that... Anyway.... I'm a lanky fella myself, and I feel a bit of a doofus driving small cars ;D. But the Twingo still seems the best bet to me - you get a couple more seats over the Smart thingy for a start!  |

Out of the 2 I'd go for the Twingo, but have you considered a Skoda Fabia?
I drove one a couple of years ago, and was well impressed.

regarding belgium, my dad bought a ford focus from belgium 6years ago, rhd everything you could want. worked out at £3k saving over buying it here who would have thought it that you can find better deals out of the uk *heinously sarcastic smilie face thing*
