The transits big brother OK so its not a car but it is definitely retro and as it seems rather rare now. ther was a few going around when I was a kid (i though they were some kind of early transit for a while) but I haven't seen any for a long time and searching the net has thrown up little info on them and very few pictures This is the only picture of one I can find at the moment

Cant tell you much meself, apart from they are the transits big brother, running on big 6 pot diesels I think. Not seen any about for ages, used to know a few 'on the road' in the early 90's- a couple of converted box trucks for living in, and a wrecker. Ill see if ive got any hard-copy pics, but doubtful... just the one old scan thats not mine... old horsebox, converted for living in, taken in '92 Maybe Fredtransit has knowledge of them?

I love em, you can see where the styling of the Mk2 transit came from. They are based on the Mk1 and the Mk2, and have both dash and doors from these, depending on the reg (1974-1981). If anybody is interested, I know of a very poorly one in West London that will be up for the chop soon, I was offered it and two Mk2 phase1 SWB free. The A series is a tipper.

If only I had the space! An A-series tipper would be spot on, better than the Movano tipper piece of rubbish I have.. why would you make a front wheel drive tipper.. why.. why?!?!?

I remember looking at an A series beaver tail recovery truck in exchange and mart a few years back, when I was considering starting a recovery business. (wish I had now, oh well hindsight's a good thing ) It was to far away though and my work had a beaver tail Mk2 transit for sale at the time as well, ended up not getting either though Not sure if this is correct but one of the mechanics at my old work used to service commercials way back when and according to him some A series had petrol V6s (3.0 Essex I assume). I guess the the majority of the remaining ones will be recovery trucks or horseboxes like many light trucks (on that note I saw an extremely tidy D series farm truck last week with a load of bales on it strangely It didn't look like it had led a hard life )

When i was at school in worked at a local scrappy that had 2, 1 had a york diesel that would only start if you had a can of easy start. And a 3.0 v6 petrol that would only run if you owned ENRON.Considering that the owner got most/all his petrol for free he still complained that it was a thirsty truck,it was an ex British telecom box van too.I repainted the diesel one twice in as many years,he soldiered on with it untill he couldnt get any more parts for it and got a leyland DAF 400 recovery truck. They were both cut up in the end, very sad as they could have carried on with a bit of TLC.

From what i can remember, they were considered unreliable. The biggest issue tho was the fact that it sat too uncomfortably between the Transit and the Ford D series. If a Transit couldnt haul it you bought a D series. I only ever drove an A series once. It was very slow, very noisy and very un Ford like. The interior was, however, very comfortable.

Yeah the mechanic that I knew said something along that lines, he reckoned they were a pain to work on as well, l recall him saying something about having to take the engine out to replace a gearbox (It was a while back so I could be remembering wrongly) .

well as far as them been unreliable, we are now in the 21st century, and you can always fit a modern engine.

Tis true, a great big modern V8 on LPG would be nice and sound lovely through a pair of stacks.

Ford also made some baby a series' that were 3.5 ton gross with 14" wheels but they looked odd. My mate had a 4.5 ton beavertail single cab and a 5.5 ton ex aa crew cab beavertail, as far as i know they are both long gone.
