ok here is an idea i have been floating about my head and to the best of my knowledge and googling believe it will work? currently have a mk2 golf the finest 89 vintage completely bogo standard 1.3 4 speed. now the idea is not to go the route of gti swaps etc but here goes the idea and i wouldnt be suprised if some one will get it done before me. 1.3 engine std 8v remove head and then convert to 16v head from a gti motor! can it be done or am i just dreaming in la la land? ?

The 1.3 is a small block, the 1.8 16 valve is a big block. As Darkc0re says, if you want to retain a small block engine and want 16 valves, VW have done the work for you The easy route to more power is just to swap to a 16 valve engine by buying a complete, running but rotten doner car

It was worth asking....if only for the 'Vag Head' thread title, which momentarily gave me a rush of blood.

go on clubpolo and do some searching, theres loads of info on there inbetween all the newbs asking if they can put a g40 cam in their 1 litre etc! from what i can remeber its mostly syraight swap, think there might be one mount that needs modifying to work. as for the engine itself, you want to be looking for 6n or 6n2 polos (mk4 &5) this will give you the choice of 75 and 100 bhp 1.4 16v (only the mk5 had the 75bhp option, all mk4s are 100bhp) and the 1.6 16v out of the polo gti will fit, both engines can be tuned to in excess of 140 bhp and they will be significantly lighter than the old vw big blocks. another option for you is the 1.6 8v aee engine as found in mk4 polos, some skoda felicias and possibly some mk3 golfs. the 1.6 will push out over 100 bhp running on polo gt fuel injection, although there is a polo on clubpolo r/roaded with 98bhp running just a 4 branch, larger throttle body and a few other basic mods on std 1.6 injection system.

Sorry to hijack, but does the AEE engine have a crossflow head?

cool info cheers for all that:) the reason for the original idea whould be to gain more ommph from a small engine as not to raise insurance too much and road tax as well GGRR!! so would be sticking with under 1500cc.
but darn shame cant sling on the 16v head to the old existing lump as would be cool and basically not a lot of modification would be needed as with theengine swap mounts etc
live n learn. live and learn

Sorry to hijack, but does the AEE engine have a crossflow head? yes its basically a development of the 800 and something cc engine first used in the audi 50, which later found its way into polos, mk1 and 2 golfs etc! all small block engines from the vw stable are pretty similar. there was also a small block derv unit found in continental spec polos and the seat terra van (only the van was available over here) they are popular with g40 modders to get more cc

why bother! now thats hardly the british attitude!
its like richard nobel saying we havebroken the world speed barrier so why bother to do it again?!!!
but basically i don't want the added CC for insurance and fuel consumption, then don't want to have to start modding the rest of the engine bay for different engine bays etc......
