Hi
Does anyone know of any good guides/books/information on rebuilding Ford English Axle Diffs?
Are there any RWD escort forums or anything?

You rebuilding an LSD or conventional. Were you wanting a step by step guide or just a bit of info.

I'm rebuilding an LSD, but only replacing the CWP, and diff nose seal so no differences from std there.
I'm looking for a bit of a guide, but more importantly all the preload settings etc.
I'm familiar with rebuilding mini gearboxes/diff's etc but I haven't done rwd Ford one before.

By rebuilding the LSD do you mean replacing the clutch packs. Which preload are you wanting to know? The CROWNwheel preload or the preload that governs the amount of slip of the axle. The clutch preload really varies on how you want your diff to behave. Which could be anywhere between fully open and fully locked (which makes driving on the road a bit of a pain). If its purely a road car you will probably want it relatively open. I will check but I don't think there is a definite preload given for the pinion shaft nut. Normally you will just check the force needed at the end of the halfshaft to rotate it. I cant remember for certain but I think there is a collapsible spacer on the pinion shaft. If it is then this must be replaced when rebuilding. But if you are using the same pinion bearing you can get a piece of tube machined to the same length as the old spacer and use that instead of the spacer when you reassmble it. Then you cannot over tension the bearing and the preload will be set correctly (presuming the preload is fine when you dismantle it). This is especially useful if you are changing the CWP on a regular basis unless you have an endless supply of collapsible spacers. I know when I wanted one for my atlas axle I had a bit of a mare getting one in a hurry.

I'm rebuilding an LSD but only replacing the CWP and the nose seal (plus any bearings that need doing). I've done mini gearboxes before but never a ford diff so instructions would be best but failing that at least a set of torques etc.

Don't know what's happening with updating this page but still. Thanks for the reply. I don't need to adjust the clutch preload as the LSD is fine and we've been using it. That involves griding the plates within the diff anyway which is not a job I fancy having a go at without someone who's done it before showing me what to do!! It's the pinion preload I was thinking of. I'm not sure looking at it whether it is collapsible on an english axle, it looks like it might need to be torqued correctly. Certainly midget ones were collapsible though. S

The english does have a collapsible spacer on the pinion shaft. If you PM me your email address I will send you the instructions and a diagram for the axle in pdf format if thats okay.
