...what's the deal with them? Prompted by this pic: I've seen Beetles with single foglamps up front, and some of the rally Minis had three spotlamps if I remember right. Is this still road legal? For some reason I thought lamps had to be mounted in pairs, except for rear fogs and reversing lamps.

That's weird, just yesterday I was hatching a plan to do something like that on the (everlasting) Merc turbo project. Dunno what the legalities are but for one day a year they can be paired up, eh?

As long as you're not removing dipped / main beam lights I don't think it matters.
Obviously the origins of it is to increase airflow to the engine (via ducting to the light aperture), but it may be becoming more of a 'fashion' thing now.
I'm a little confused as to how it works on some motors.... I've seen e30 BMW's with it done, but e30's have the dipped beam on the outermost lights and main on the inner ones. To remove one inner one, the main beam would have to be on a mechanism on the outer ones, which must be a bit of a complicated job? Are golf's the same? Presumably the redundant 'main' would then be hooked up as an auxillary driving light....

err, I dunno ;D
On my Golf, the inner lamps are front fogs. Part of the 'Campaign' spec, whereas on other Mk1s the inner pair are auxiliary driving lamps (spots).

You could just run standard H4 type bulbs nickB, the wiring would just all connect to the same bulb rather than two then. Most bulbs have a dip and a main in them.
