I have the oportunity to acquire by fair means a couple of early Reliants for a cheap sum of the queen's legal tender. Specimin one is a rare 3 door estate version of the Regal, not a Supervan with windows cut into it, but a genuine Factory estate which only ran to 90-100 units or so. But an estate. Specimin #2 is one of the first ever Robins, low chassis number, on an M plate. I think its the fastback saloon thing version. Both have been "carefully stored" by being pushed out into the garden and ignored for a decade or something. I have a couple of mates who know their way around Reliants. Apparently these are both "sought after" but that seems a little hinky to me. My thoughts are... 1. buy 2. fix 3. drive 4. V5C comes back from Swansea 5. sell the idea being to experiance 3 wheel fun (I'm told it is fun and I have never tried it) and hopefully make a few quid for the resto fund. Trying to make money on Reliants seems like a deeply shag idea but I am strangely drawn to it. Any one have any thoughtful insight?

I remember being surprised at how much Reliant Regals fetch. A rare car like that should have the enthusiasts climbing over each other to get to it I'd have thought. I think I'd be tempted to just punt it on without doing anything to it if you got it cheap enough and could get a good price for it. So my thoughts are:
1. Buy 2. Sell

chassis will be buggered i guess, but these can be adapted from a latr rialto [1980's] which had a galve chassis
you can get an on the road robin for £400-500, so is it worth restoring a binner that you payed £100 for?

Regals aren't that fancied I don't think - though people will seemingly pay stupid money for 'one of them Del Boy Robin Reliant van things.'
I'd like to try one myself but what excites me most is seeing a little plastic big parked next to one of your iron behemoths! A delicous contrast.

Exactly.
1. Buy 2. Fix 3a. Drive Reliant one day b. Drive Olds/Buick next day, and so on. 4. Bring mirth to the lives of colleagues and friends.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

A strange vision popped into my mind which involved tethering these two Reliants to the front of one of your big US bruisers, like some kind of Plastic Pig-drawn carriage. Obviously you'd need to sort out minor details like steering and pedal controls, but the vision would be one to behold. You could sit back in your retro American armchair whilst benefiting from three-wheeler MPG figures! I've thought it all through and there are absolutely NO HOLES in this idea whatsoever. It will all work perfectly.

^^ lolz.... that, I'd pay to see.
here's my 2p on old reliants.
1 buy 2 fix 3 break down, fix again 4 book mot, fix lights and wipers on way 5 fail mot, really badly. Kingpin, brakes, lights (again...) chassis rot are all par for the course. 6 Buy Back Street Heroes, consider building trike and growing a beard 7 wake up in cold sweat, then remember not to do step 1

My dad had a Reliant Robin Super 850 when I was at secondary school. For this I was mercilessly ridiculed, until the school psycho's dad also got one. After that, any mention of three wheelers were met with savage beatings... ;D

1. Buy 2. Fix 3. Drive 4. Try to go round a corner 5. Fall over ;D I've been a passenger in a quick 3 wheeler or two. So long as you can handle the deeply frightening sensation of two-wheeling round fastly taken mini roundabouts they can be hustled along remarkably quickly. In comparitive terms.

I briefly had a very early (M reg) Robin, it was quite fun to drive but only for very short distances and at low speeds, motorways were a terrifying experience, especially when the weather wan't on your side. I paid good money for a good one, and sold it for about the same amount when I got bored.
I originally bought the Robin because I fancied a Regal but couldn't find a good/reasonably priced one that wasn't miles away. I'd still like a Regal but only for short trips to the shops on nice sunny days etc. It'd have to be a saloon though, the vans always have "that" image and I'd even be reluctant to have an estate (although I haven't seen it to judge) as I like the rear of the saloon with it's reverse-rake window and miniscule fin things.
With those ones I'd:
1. Buy if they're very cheap 2. Sell the Robin 3. Fix the Regal 4. Drive it for a bit 5. Find a Reliant mentalist who'll swap it for a saloon in better conidtion

IF one of them is a Regal Estate, you must buy it immediately. This is to prevent any 'Trotterisation' taking place. Even if you just have it as a garden ornament.
Should anyone suggest you 'do it like Del Boys' you have my full permission to remove their eyes with a blunt spoon / harpoon them with a pitchfork / shred their knackers in a hand-turned mincing machine. Come the revolution, Trotterisation will be a criminal offence punishable by the longest, most drawn out horrible death imaginable. Ba$tards.
