I'm working on a new project. One thing I'm pretty sure of is that it's going to have a VW Beetle transaxle, but it probably won't have a Beetle engine. I came accross somebody who would sell me a plate and flywheel for a Rover V8, that's a bit much for what I have in mind.
Anybody know of a supplier of adaptor plates for these transaxles? Or if there are any engines that will bolt on without a plate?

Isnt there a conversion kit to join a subaru engine onto one of those boxes? or an Alfa 33? I may of course have imagined that.

There certainly used to be one for the Alfa boxer, but I can't find anybody selling one these days.
As for the Scooby engine, yes you can get them, but it wouldn't suit me. The car is going to be very lightweight, and I'm not looking for loads of power. In none turbo form the power to weight ratio of the Scooby lump is poor. In turbo form it's too powerful for the rest of the car.
Thanks for the replies though.

Are you looking at something Zetec/K-series/VX style, ie lightweight 16 valve 2l?

When you're looking at the sort of all up weight I am, then a Scooby lump is heavy. It is a heavy lump, compared with some. To qualify I'm looking for a power output in the range 100-150bhp, the scoob is heavy in that sort of spec, but then it would be because it's built to deal with so much more.
I'm aiming for a very low all up weight (you wouldn't believe me if I told you) and 150bhp would give a very respectable power to weight ratio. A heavy engine would muck up the handling, and too much power would make it too much of a handful.
If you've ever driven one of the more powerful Caterhams you'll know what I'm talking about. The R500 is often no fun because you're constantly trying to balance power and speed against grip and road/track conditions. Often you're concentrating so hard you're not having fun.

Why not just go straight for a bike engine. 100-150bhp can be had for £200, the weigh nothing and come with a gearbox!
