Here she is as she was bought
Pulls like a train (essex V6) and stops well, already has halogens and is pretty sound. the chassis is better than some of our Mk2s, but there is some serious parts swapping going on over her life.
The steering box/shaft, steering cowling, ignition lock, steering wheel and column switches are all transit Mk2. The steering wheel is a bit near for that, but you get used to it. I need to get some big springs for the back......
the paint is seriously bad! The seller admitted he had hand painted it with household satin paint, don't even know if it's exterior quality!
the good news is it's not hiding lots of rust, the wings are all steel (not filler!).
OMG the paint is BAD! Only cosmetic though. Here's the best bit, we had no idea how huge it was! We measured her, and the wheelbase is 13ft, the total length is 23ft, so she's bigger than the biggest Mk2 luton. As a Petrol I doubt we will be able to afford to fill both tanks, I stopped at £60!
She already has Mk2 steering and brakes, and a D series bumper! I think the tanks are D series too, that £60 only made half of the gauge. We are planning a DI for her, and defo improve that paint!!
Also the wings have been bodged in a big way. Where the headlights and indicators go have been flushed off with flat steel plate, and the lights have been fixed directly to the plates. The indicators are not originals, and the headlights are halogen replacements, so they can be re used, I have some NOS indicators so I was thinking to put them on the camper reversion and the reversion's ones on the truck. We replaced the bezels and ally dishes on the amby with NOS so the ones off the amby can go on the truck too.
Well sadly the V6 won't be staying! As she's tax exempt she's also LEZ exempt, so it would be almost rude not to fit a diesel. Anyway the V5 still says heavy oil.
Fitted some black and silver plates, removed some of the none original stickers, replaced the steering wheel with an original Mk1 transit and re fitted a tow hook/ball as it was missing when we bought her.
The more I look the more I realise she was a good buy. Somebody has spent a lot of time and or money on a re wire. She has not one but 3 fuse boards, Durite ones. A stainless exhaust, a 3 piece prop and coil helpers for the front springs! I think they are helpers, cos she's still got the leaf springs, I will get some pics tomorrow. There are extra bits of strengthening all over the truck, like on the cab floor, and a tube strut like an underbonnet stiffening bar instead of the front crossmember. It's a shame they did so little with the outside. I had an amber beacon fitted and sprayed the wheels silver.
Oh and it turns out it's a cologne, complete with leccy ignition which is just as well cos the dizzy is stuffed right under the fierwall and checking points would be impossible!
I fitted these door mirrors, the Mk2 mirrors had to go -
I have only had them for about 25 years  , bought them to fit to our first Mk1 transit, then found out the arms were ally so we couldn't chrome them, so had the arms copied. I think they came off a VW LT or a Merc, the heads are modern generic though as the originals were both cracked. They are black plastic, so I painted them hammerite. I think they suit the truck, and we can use the Mk2 head elsewhere
The beacon works!
Well not much happened with her recently, except the other day the fuel pump packed up! That done, was taking her to bed, going up the A40, and had forgot the Mk1 transit effect! had some bloke following me honking and giving me the thumbs up! At first I thought something had dropped off or she was belching smoke, but he pulled up along side and waved and gave me the thumbs up. You forget when you haven't driven a Mk1 for a bit, people love em!
