Well, I'm doing freelance motoring journo work so I've got to get my snapper skills up to scratch, one day...

I’ve often wondered about that…. When someone is writing an article for a car mag, apart from taking your own pics with a digicam, where can you get pics from? I mean, in practical classics there are often ‘history’ stories etc featuring old brochure shots, publicity shots and what have you, how does the copyright lark work for them? And if you are writing one, do you as the author supply the pics? Or what?

There's the heritage archive place - is it based at Gaydon? Or Beaulieu? Can't remember. They have thousands and thousands of archive pictures and files and I think they source them. I'd LOVE to work there.

It depends, a lot of the time if you ask for permission from who ever holds the copyright then it is ok to use the images, because the mags are not using them for financial benefit (advertising etc), more for information purposes to the audience. Thats why you see a lot of 'thanks to' at the end of articles.
It depends on the story/the magazine regarding the author taking his own pics. I've done a buying guide in this months Performance GTi magazine, I wrote it but a professional studio (CTP in Kent) shot the car, it all boils down to how big the article is and what the editor wants from it. It was a 6 page spread and each individual photo was 50MB, they had to be written them onto a DVD disc...
I do a one page monthly report for Track & Race Car, on the progress with the Mini, that is taken on a good quality Digi cam by me and I simply send them via Hotmail. Mags like Evo, they will use pro photography every time, their snaps are breath taking.
