I like threads like this.. I currently have 'Halfords Classic' 20w50 in my Herald but I would have no problems with any mineral oil of the same viscosity in it. I change it as is recommended in the handbook (every 6000 miles) and change the filter at the same time (book recommends every other oil change though).
I'd bring gear oil into it as I have some questions about that, but I'll save that for another thread...

20W/50 Halfrauds stuff but I'd be keen on finding the cheaper equivalent - my Morrissons do you mean the supermarket? - I didn't know they (or Asda) even sold engine oil!
I did put in some cheap slop from Lidl once but it seemed so thin that after a couple of hundred miles in the warm summer I got uneasy about it and changed it..

Halfords 15w40 semi synth in the 205 and shitroen. 205's blue smoke cleared up a bit when I changed to it, wonder if it had had some nasty thin wibblepoo in it before that was seeping past the valve stem seals.

Wilkinsons stock cheap oil too - that's what my fleet get. Cheap and change often seems to be the best rule. Waste of time putting expensive stuff in if it comes out again either before or during the next service!

Wilkinsons stock cheap oil too - that's what my fleet get. Cheap and change often seems to be the best rule. Waste of time putting expensive stuff in if it comes out again either before or during the next service! I would say that depends on the engine. In my dad's first XR3i, the valve stem seals went. He never let it go low, but he did put in 15W40 as 'the oldest trick in the book' as our then mechanic suggested. In 20,000 miles time he killed the cam, as did a mate with a 1.4 PTE (a newer CVH) Escort. That XR3i however got stolen and back then, head off was the only known way to change the valve stem seals. In the second one, we stuck to 10W40 even when it was curse word it out. Fortunately S-Pikket tool meant that you could change the stem seals in situ (after we continuously topped it up for 15,000 miles and whatever the previous owners did). That did 160,000 miles (a good 30,000 over the previous car) with no signs of the tappets or camshaft giving up. FWIW, Ford recomended 10W30 at the time (now it's only a fully synthetic and a rather price one). Ford now say 5W30 is fine. The Cabrio we ran on this with no glitches or usage whatsoever, plus it's not too pricey being a common oil in semi-synthetic form these days. Even on cars leaking turbos I've seen tappets die with people going to 15W50 when they are meant to take 5W40.

Oh yeah, I certainly wouldn't use cheap oil in anything with a turbocharger, or anything that actually had performance. They do tend to need a fancier brew.

I stick halfords 20/50 classic oil in the Allegro when the oil is changed and when I have to top up I use 20/50 comma stuff cos its cheap but good quality.
Never never NEVER get tempted to use that cack £5 motorway curse word. It varnishes up the engine internals and fecks everything up. Only of any use on an old clunker thats being scrapped when the MOT runs out... just to stop the engine from seizing!

Since putting the 1660 in the scRot, its only had Halfords Classic, apart from the first couple of hundred miles when i ran some cheap stuff just to run it in. From what I can make out the halfords classic stuff is actaully repackaged Duckhams oil?? But when it had the 1100 in it had whatever curse word I could find cheap or free (For quite a while it was running Caterpillar Plant machinary engine oil ;D)

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.
