AFAIK, the BusBarn Panel Van, Linde Bus and the 'Rodent' 53 Barndoor, use Ankor wax to help protect the metal against the elements, I know first hand that the Rodent bus is not something you want to lean up against in a light coloured T-Shirt! ha ha!
But then none of those have had the paint ground off, they are mostly original paint, with the waz used to slow down the rusting process, I'm pretty sure none of them believe that it will be stopped altogether, but it should certainly aid longevity.
Incidentally, I believe the Linde bus apparently needed a fair bit of structural work as did the Mercury bus when they were brought over.... they are now both solid.

with the waz used to slow down the rusting process, Thought Urine was acidic? That won't do any good! ;D Interesting info, not sure I'll be bare-metalling the Golf any time soon though! I'm trying to find out if you can buy a satin-finish clear lacquer but no success so far...

I know you can get a highly protective satin or matte furniture polish/wax/lacquer for outdoor use...Would that be useful?

Think Nick was onto a Winner, Place the Car into a Spray Baking room, Give it a while to dry out the car, Then this is the bit i am unsire about, Spray on Clear Lacquer, I am sure though this would make the car shiney somewhat.
On the other hand it might not look that good but hey got the money give it a try lol

On the other hand it might not look that good but hey got the money give it a try lol no need for laquer, if the bodywork is 100% moisture free, then slap a healthy coating of Ankor wax (or similar) on and hey presto... matte finish and as long as it's kept topped up - it's rust protection too.... I believe it's very much a waxoyl type thing, so it'd be as effective as that kind of stuff is on the underside of cars

If the lacquer was too shiny you could always rough it up with a brillo pad!

You can put a matting agent into the lacquer if you're doing a 2 Pack job, just like you can in any other regular paint. I think so anyway... then you'll get a coat that'll protect it and no shine. I've seen some Dubs with regular lacquer over rust and it doesn't look all that bad, but the shine is still there. Don't look as good really...

I still think real barn-find patina looks a king compared to fake sand-it-down patina. If I was forced to choose one of these rat cars it'd be one that'd simply been found, had minimal work for a ticket and driven.

Freshly ground then mopped and brushed = beautiful...
Matte lacquer over it = the win.

I kind of thought the first 'Rusted' Golf I saw was 'Interesting' - in a kind of artistic statement kind of way - but now I think its just a bit odd & not really a look I find appealing. Strange as I love the whole 'Rat-Look' of these old aircooled VWs where the natural patina is preserved - rather than being forced. I think this is due to the atmosphere these vehicles have - especially when the owner has customised it with suitably aged period accessories - oh and a storming motor Kind of like the difference between these pretent out-of-town old pubs they seem to be able to build in a weekend & an actual old village pub. BTW; I love the Forum as it is - just all about the cars Shame I don't seem to be able to browse & post as much as I used too
