So your saying because someone hasnt been here that long their opinion matters less than anyone elses? From what I'm reading id say you would be one of the last people to giving advice on how the forum is run I'm not saying that you cant have a valid opinion, but i wouldnt walk into a job on my first day and tell everyone else how to do there jobs. hotwaire and the rest of the mods doa great job with the forum, unaided, and its one of the only forums out there that hasnt had any biccering (up untill late anyways) on it. I'm intrigued at to why 'i would be one of the last people to be giving adivce on how the forum is run'?

The forum really needs an off topic section aswell, people will have friends on here that they don't talk to anywhere else and may just want to talk to them about general things or maybe a movie they just saw etc urgh please no never.. offtopic why bother.. don't let this become just a mindless pointles drivel forum its so focused and pure as it is.

Because the way I was being spoken to after i made a simple suggestion without resorting to argueing or anything made it seem like to you my opinion didnt matter and even if you didnt mean it that way its possible that people considering joining could read it and decide not to

So that was fun! Anyways, real vs. fake patina - what do we think (and can anyone find a pic of the '59 in the POD video)?

Wow this went really far off topic real quick... This site has been giving me pause for thought recently, because it eats up a huge amount of my time,.. and it's been really curse word me off. People curse word about this, whining about that. People playing silly buggers by logging in pretending to be other users. etc. etc. This forum set out to be the best, most interesting and diverse forum about our particular take on modified classic cars there could be... and it is,.. it's not just the best in the UK, it's pretty much the best in the world. Why? Because up until recently there was no bitching and moaning, there was no slagging of other peoples cars, there was no "well thats just curse word" comments on threads. The forum continues to have some of the most interesting discussions about our particular scene, to pick a handful from the last day! : here: retrorides.proboards29.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1122982228here: retrorides.proboards29.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1123059888here: retrorides.proboards29.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1122895440here: retrorides.proboards29.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1122936544here: retrorides.proboards29.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1122473109These are about car styles AND about technical issues. If you don't like the style stuff discussed,.. don't read it. If you want to talk off topic, go to another forum, this forum is about modified cars. If you want to a/s/l go to MSN or email. A forum lives and dies by it's members and this forum was already one of the most exciting and interesting car forums on the net when we had just 10 members. Check out the first 2 pages : retrorides.proboards29.com/index.cgi?board=general&page=215retrorides.proboards29.com/index.cgi?board=general&page=214If you don't like what we talk about, or don't like the rules we post by,.. go elsewhere, please.

Well I like it here - this is the busiest forum I use and there`s not normally the curse word fights we get on the Mini forums BTW - I`ve got a Ford Focus as my daily drive To enhance the normal image I even have a nodding dog in the back shelf But then I go home and get my speed bump scraping, alarm setting off, tourist scaring, tinied number plated Mini out ;D

So your saying because someone hasnt been here that long their opinion matters less than anyone elses? From what I'm reading id say you would be one of the last people to giving advice on how the forum is run Are you a wind-up merchant? In answer to your first question, I would say YES DEFO! If its their opinion on the actual fabric of the forum itself! You cant just turn up on a forum and start saying this is no good about it and thats no good. So, get some constructive interesting posts going or shut up whinging.

Wow! Err, anyway. Not sure if it's been mentioned already but from what I can gather, there's a clear wax that people use on boats, that gets used to preserve rusty bodywork from the elements. Or A coat of WD-40. How you stop dust and muck sticking to it, I don't know. Some of those Golfs had their paint removed using an angle-grinder with a wire brush attachment, I've got pics of some dutch ones with said grinders resting on the bonnets... From what I can gather, people tend to use just-scraped-through-the-MOT bangers, bare metal 'em, cover them in salt water and leave... Certainly, if I were going to do it (and the thought has crossed my mind before!) I'd be on eBay looking for a £30 heap with a few months MOT left, sell off any interior/exterior trim to recover the cost, then get busy with the grinder ;D

We were probably both thinking of some sticky-wax type product, like you might stick in yer hair..... But what about boardwax, like you'd coat your surfboard with.... smooth finish that wouldn't pick up dirt and grime... and must be pretty good at protecting against the ravages of the elements. Might need something bigger than one of those sticks you get though. Unless you had ALOT of time on your hands.

A coat of wax on some rust won't stop it rusting away underneath. That's like putting a coat on an hour after it started raining and expecting not to be wet.
If it really is just surface rust, then you could sand off the rust layer and be back to bare metal. But waxing it would almost certainly be 'sealing' it's fate.

Somewhere I've got the issue of Volksworld with the feature on that Mercury Marine bus in, I'm sure it said something about wax but I can't remember now. My first thought was clear lacquer, but can you get that in a satin finish? Would look a bit shiney otherwise, which kind of defeats the point

OK, so the rust will get worse if there's moisture between the surface oxidation and the wax.... How about bunging the stripped / rusted car in an oven normally used in paint applications to remove all the moisture before the application of a top coat. A bit overkill perhaps. But in theory it ought to work (?)

p.o.d are you a secret god botherer? ;D Nah, just used to watch MTV2 a lot in about 1999 when Slipknot were cool (I never thought they were cool... or in fact making a noise even vaguely similar to music) and I was still in school. Btw - I wouldn't go calling any god botherers god botherers or it might... bother them Slipknot's second album didn't hit big until mid-late 2000...Ruined an otherwise boss year for music. Re: the forum...HTW Has pointed out quite regularly that it's for car talk...Not off-topic talk. There are countless forums out there where you can talk about your day, your cat, your neighbours' nocturnal habits...This is a forum for retro rides. Cool, retro cars which, quite often, but not always are modified. I love this forum because of the sheer breadth of discussion here - turbocharged imps, how to prep bodywork and many, MANY threads of just ogling damn nice cars. *n

wow, just read all that - that got nasty! pleased ur sticking to your guns hotwire, this place rocks the fat one! btw, as far as i am aware the wax used is some kind of 'special' wax ... wish i had paid more attention previously now i am hugely against people stripping back to bare metal and encouraging the rust. i just don't see the point. But preserving a natural patina rocks - its like celebrating the cars history imo but give me a shiny car anyday!

I loved it when I saw it at Dubfreeze that year, but loads of people just "didn't get it" ;D It was for sale a while after, and I really wanted it but couldn't justify another 16valve Golf!
