Hi All ,Merry Xmas . Well as some of you may recall,I was looking for a car for my son a few weeks back. Son was also looking for a car,but we kept stalling him,cos we had eventually bought a Pug 106 ,and hid it up for delivery outside our house xmas morning! SWMBO and I thought of various ways to present him with the keys, and settled on putting them in a sealed box, duly wrapped! Everyone was digging in to the presents ,but were all watching out of the corner of our eye as he unwrapped the 'box'.looking puzzled, keys in his hand ,I said "well you better go outside ,its out there". You can imagine the rush ,as 6 adults all dropped the presents we were opening ,and legged it to the back door of the house, and bundled each other through it !I lost my shoe somewhere in the mellee!Got a huge car park outside ,with a few blind spots,so he had to wander a bit to see it !we all stood there freezing our nuts off ,as he stared at it in disbelief . I must admit I had a tear in my eye! We had insured it as well ,and it wasnt due to come in to force, until m/night on 25th. He drove it around the grounds (sounds grand, but its only a school!!),got used to it He was King'o' the Hill!!.His mates gradually filtered round during the day ,after he had nonchalantly mentioned on the phone, he had "got a car for Christmas". His initial drive at m/night seems to have been ok ,as Ive looked round it this morning, and WHEW,no damage! Sorry about rambling ...it was a big event for us! Rod

10000% COOL DAD !!
Congratulations.
I love the idea of helping kids get their first cars.
The idea is that they get to share in the cost and responsibility, but it is a great thing to do.
I got Nicola's daughter a Corsa for £100 recently, and it is parked up at her dads place, SORN'ed and waiting for end January 2009, and for her to collect / save up for most of the insurance, then she can get going. We will give her back some of the money for the insurance, so that she can at least afford the fuel, but she has been very good recently at saving up for the insurance.
Good luck to your son, and may he have many miles of smiles in his new freedom mobile.

Tescos.By far the cheapest ,and with business use as standard. Boss present. I got a Ka 3 at a mega reduced price as my first car. It was worth about £4000 at the time, I had £800, dad said 'give us that then' and paid for 6 months insurance. This was on top of the Renault 10 that he 'found' at 'work'. Just pray to christ you never have to make a claim with Tossco. I've dealt with people on fire who were more help. Make sure you get them to state IN WRITING how long the courtesy car period is for, cos they lied on my policy document. Get them to agree IN WRITING what his excess is as well if he has to claim, because my excess amount over the phone changed 4 times depending on who I was speaking to, what their cat was doing at 02:31 each day and at what angle they fell out of the womb. Incidentally none of the quoted amounts matched the figure on my policy document. During this prolonged period of amateur night on the part of customer services, I would argue the toss with whoever the call got escalated to, and was told, constantly: 'No, no, the excess amount we have here is correct and your policy document is wrong'. Strangely they never had a comeback when I pointed out that the figure changed every time I phoned, normally to complain that they'd taken the courtesy car away or something, as their bodyshop cocked up and went over the deadline. 'Well you'll just have to get the bus to work then' was the response of one manager, who refused to give me his name. I had to buy my mum a new phone after that little incident. Their approved bodyshop tried to give me back a car with more scratches on it than what it came in with. If he gets any points make sure they're on his file and not just 'as notes'. They are not the same thing. I declared my points on the day I got them, and then got charged £57 to make a claim 'because the points aren't on your file, they're just annotations'. To this day I have never got this money back despite various legal threats. Sorry to slash on your bonfire, harumph Christmas and all that.

Excellent present! Cool dad indeed! I bet he was over the moon, and watching the clock until midnight when he was able to take it out! I remember my first car (Skoda Rapid) sitting on the drive and being unable to drive it because I wasn't insured yet. I also remember my first drive in it - priceless memories!

My pa did similar for me when I was 16. Bought me a SWB land rover that he found at a local farm, and was being used as storage for hay bales (on it and in it!)
I got the keys in an envelope, and a haynes manual! Still got it to this day (I'm now 27)

Excellent parenting........ I am now up for adoption fella I hope he'll be cajoled into all things RR and we'll be seeing a ride thread too. Glad he kept it together for the initial try out too. Just imagine all his mates now wondering why they 'only' asked for an Ipod ;D Nice one

Well,he's gotta pay the insurance money back ,but we reckon the money he saves in booze will easy cover that !Ive sat him down and lectured him on the DD problem! Mind you,I did that with the older one ,and reminded him about it literally EVERY time he went out.It didnt stop him from getting an 18 month ban ,after only been driving for 6 months, for DD!! Hey Ho! He's not interested in modifying any car I'm afraid! I wouldve had the wheels off and a spoiler on it in the first 24hrs back in the day! He apreciates customised cars and all things drag racing ,but just aint interested really! Still ,as SWMBO says ,I cant live my life through him ,and if he don't want to know ,so be it! BUT I 've tried to convert both of them over the yrs,it just aint worked! The older one drives a Z4 BM ,and gets all the work done on it in dealerships.

I guess the road safety/drink drive message doesnt get appreciated until you get older. I used to have my parents on at me about speeding/DD/crashing etc and although I didnt drink drive or crash or anything I didnt really pay much attention to them. Now I'm older ive had mates loose their licence through drink driving, crash their cars though doing something stupid so now I know what my parents were on about! A couple of years ago one of my closest mates killed himself in his BMW though driving too fast... now thats a wake up call!!

good work fella. i was lucky when i turned 17. my dad paid for my provisional licence, and my 2 driving tests. my gran paid for my 6 driving lessons. and my dad had set aside some money to help buy me my first car, i only had to put a bit too it and my mam put me on her insurance. so in august 1990 i was free to terrorize the streets in a hand painted disabled charriot blue mk2 escort 1300 popular plus. powah!! also didnt listen to parental warnings about driving, and subsequently within a year had been prosecuted for wreckless driving, in a 1256 chevette no less. I'm a lot different now that I'm older and wiser. my two girls are only 7 and 5 so i have plenty of time to sort out money to get them mobile, as thats my job, or so I'm informed by their curse word mother. this was my plan all along, regardless of what she said. i feel its my duty as their dad to keep them out of kia's, which their mam and family seem to favour. A class benz's should be retro by the time paige hits 17.
